Storm surge or storm tide happens in coastal areas where water or tide levels rise because of severe precipitation or low-pressure weather systems. During Hurricanes Sandy and Ida, storm surges caused severe damage to areas that were near sea-level, including New York City and along the shores of the Hudson River, causing damage to marinas, parks, railways, homes, and more.
