As sea-level rises, ocean saltwater can leach into groundwater layers (aquifers), actually contaminating freshwater and making it brackish. If this groundwater will be pumped to the surface by a well to use for drinking and other human needs, this can be a big issue! Long Island is one location where saltwater intrusion to groundwater is a major issue. Treating water that has been contaminated by salt is expensive and difficult.
