Any low-lying area can flood, so when heavy precipitation, a major storm, or the impacts of sea-level rise near the coast strike, basements will be particularly vulnerable. This can cause mold and damage to homes, and be life-threatening in the case of basement apartments where there is not a higher floor to escape to. Hurricanes such as Sandy in 2012 and Ida in 2021 caused widespread flooding in the New York area, sadly resulting in loss of life and causing many homes to be so badly damaged they had to be gutted or torn down, with people losing most everything inside to water damage.
