Drought: a period of abnormally dry weather (lack of precipitation) that creates an imbalance in the hydrologic (water) cycle in an area; the severity depends upon the degree of moisture deficiency, the duration, and the size of the affected area.
Drought is a widespread issue around the world, including at times in New York even though the climate is temperate and not arid (dry). Locally, drought can lead to numerous issues: decreased availability of drinking water (both well & municipal water), depleted aquifers (groundwater), agricultural issues, ecological impacts, and even wildfires in particular areas of the Hudson Valley.
