For my live set, at times I need a clean boost to put my solos up in the mix. Sometimes the guitar tone is very clean, round, and jazz-like, so I want to be sure the manner of boosting allows the signal to stay totally clean.

What's better for this: a booster or an EQ pedal? For example, two pedals I'm considering for this purpose are the MXR MC-401 Boost/Line Driver and the MXR M-108 Graphic EQ. I'm not tied to MXR pedals or anything, but those are general examples of what I'm thinking of.

For a volume boost, you want it in the loop. If you wanted to hit the front end of the amp a little harder, you would want the booster. It won't make anything louder, just add a bit more gain. Though the EQ could do that as well, like I mentioned before.

You have the ability to boost your signal, increase your volume and adjust your EQ. You can set it as just a buffer, just a booster, just an EQ, all kinds of options. Kinda hard to find, but here is one-

good thing with eq pedal is you can boost the mids which requires less of a level boost to cut through a mix. especially useful in 2 guitar bands. i personally usually just use a mxr micro amp in loop or in front of amp that is set and will remain set clean. i usually have lot of mids in my regular tone so to cut through i just need a small clean volume boost.

This is very true. A good EQ pedal is a swiss army knife of tone. IMO, there's really no reason to buy a booster unless you can't afford a good EQ (and then you'd buy an EHX LBP-1 or Screaming Bird or maybe a Dano overdrive).

Ok, I think I'll get an EQ pedal for the boosts, and maybe I'll try building the mosfet booster. I've recently been wanting to try building a pedal, so that could be a good first project. I know it's what they suggest at the DIYstompboxes forum.

An EQ gives you a clean boost if you keep all the sliders "flat" and simply raise the volume. But an EQ can be more versatile because you can add a couple of subtle tonal boosts as well in order to accentuate certain tonal characteristics of your lead or solo.

I use a Biyang EQ, very clean and versatile, inexpensive and well-made. But any good EQ pedal will do. But the Pigatronix Class A Boost is also a nice unit and simply a boost, nothing more. Well-made, inexpensive pedal. Enjoy your exploration!

"I LOVE these two pedals. I've had the Super Sweet on (all the time) ever since I got it...for clean stuff it sounds great and for cranked stuff and solos. I haven't even messed with the dip switches yet because it sounded so good right out of the box. The Super Clean also sounds really good - I tried the Hi mid boost setting and like that a lot"

"Both the Super Sweet and Super Clean pedals sound so good! They are useful in many different applications. Such as keeping your volume the same level when switching from humbuckers to single coil pickups. Retaining a good clean signal while using multiple effect pedals, but first and foremost these two pedals just sound and feel incredible! Cheers to my longtime friends at Xotic for completely knocking it out of the park on these pedals."

As I pointed out in a previous post, the only way to increase the volume for your solos is to somehow put some form of volume control (clean boost, volume pedal, equalizer, etc.) after your overdrive/distortion. It does not matter if this overdrive/distortion comes from an amp or a pedal. A clean boost placed before will increase the gain, not the volume so much whereas a clean boost placed after will increase the volume.

What is said here regarding clean boost is eseentially true, I do find one FYI point to add and that is the relative ability of your effects loop. Some effects are just instrument level and most effects loops are line level. Some effects have a db boost switch for line level and some loops have a level adjust. Common sense will tell you that a instrument level clean boost is not going to work well in a line level loop, it cannot. I am lucky and my amp (Carvin V3) has 2 programable to channel clean boosts (one is a mod) which raise the amp vol and not the gain intensity. rather cool.

I use all three on my board, a clean boost, ODs, and gains. I like differing options. I prefer clean boosts and ODs before high gains if one is stacking for an effect. An OD after changes the character and voice of the higher gain. Exception is that I use a Fat Boost 3 end of chain as Fuller recommends the unit, it fattens up anything without coloring it before it, but is not set to increase the vol.

Hi

Could you recommend a clean boost pedal that would not add grit when placed at the end of the chain into the effects return. The amp is a Matrix VB800 with an effects level.

Best Regards

The Level knob is an interesting addition, and it raises some questions about what the purpose of the Gain knob is. Think of the pedal as an amp for a second: the Gain knob is basically a volume knob (preamp), while the Level knob is more of a master volume (postamp) knob. What this means is that the Azor Pure Boost not only enables you to add up to 20dB to your signal, but it also allows you to tweak the amount of compression and saturation that the signal gains as it passes through the pedal. We think this is an elegant way of putting a clean boost together, as it provides solutions for players who want a signal boost without sacrificing any of their squeaky clean tone.

Summary: Truly flat EQ response, zero coloration, clean boost pedal that takes your tone and gives you more, much more of it. Can be used as a simple clean booster, or can slam the front of your amp with up to 24dB of gain.

Pros: Does only one thing: It boosts your signal, giving you more cleans, or slamming your preamp tubes into sweet, singing, sustaining distortion. No bells and whistles, just a single volume knob. Super cool stainless steel finish, with backlit lettering.

To Use As Serum: Apply 2-3 drops directly to clean, dry skin. Be sure to not let the dropper come in direct contact with your skin. Massage into skin in upward, circular motions until evenly distributed and fully absorbed.

Clean & Boost is a water based cleanser and etchant that has been designed to remove contaminants from the surface of a tooth prior to bonding, while being kinder to tissues than Phosphoric Acid etchants. Clean & Boost increases bond strength up to 36% when used in conjunction with a single bottle adhesive.

The Bad Bob pedal is one of the best boost pedals available. It's a booster based on the famous and much copied mini-booster"JFET mu-amp" design of Jack Orman (checkout his site to learn more). This design was also usedas the basis for most other boutique boost pedals. We use NOS Fairchild2N5457 FETs, and only a small percentage of even these original parts have thecorrect specs, as FET manufacturing is not very precise. There areno good FETs being made anymore, except some tiny Surface Mount Technology (SMT)parts designed for automated machine manufacturing.

KLON : The KLON Centaur is not as clear asBad Bob, it is more compressed, even at minimum gain. Also theKLON is not nearly as loud at it's clean boost setting. The tonedifference is really noticeable with the guitar's volume and/ortone turned down a bit - it makes the KLON sound dull incomparison.

Z Vex Super Hard On : This pedal is much cleaner than the BB,if you need just a totally clean booster the SHO is probablybetter. The Bad Bob has nice grit/drive even at the same volumesetting as OFF. But the sound is not very useful at a unity gainsetting, so it's not a great buffer pedal like the SHO. At mediumboost, the SHO is sharper and cleaner sounding, the Bad Bob isnot as bright, has a thicker, richer tone. The SHO is just asloud when turned up all the way, and the two pedals sound moresimilar when cranked up loud as the amp is really runningoverloaded by that point. The Bad Bob has a bit less hiss whencranked, I was surprised by this but maybe due to some high endrolloff. The Bad Bob is sort of like a Rangemaster clone (our Beano Boost) but without the tone change andemphasis of certain frequencies.

Beano Boost (not really a clean boost) : The Beano Boost is a rangemaster clone. It will give an amp nice cut and focus, and add a crunch, depending on how high you have the level set on the pedal. The Rangemaster pedals change your tone, boosting the selected frequencies. If you are going for a classic rock tone, it could be awesome and I like to run my Beano Boost into a dirt pedal as my amps are usually set clean.

The Bad Bob is a dirty clean boost, and does not change your tone. It may cause your amp to overdrive more depending on how closethe amp is to breakup, and how high you have the knob on thepedal. The Bad Bob cleans up nicely when you back your guitar volume knob down, leaving a clean, pure tone with clarity and detail that will make your amp sound better evenwith no added gain. Many Dumble amps have a "FET Input", which is similar to what theBad Bob does when it's cleaned up. I like to run my Bad Bob late in the signal chain, afterdirt boxes. It's also a great buffer when used like this, as it send a nice strong signal to your amp.

New in late 2018 : Drive knob option.

The optional DRIVE knob (on the right) is exactly the same as standard Bad Bob when turned up all the way. The pedal adds a bit of dirt. You can turn it down to get a cleaner sound. Down all the way is a totally clean boost. Like many pedals, the drive knob has a voltage on it, so it will make noise when you turn it. You won't be turning it while playing so it's not an issue. You can also get clean sounds by turning your guitar down on any Bad Bob. Dual Bad Bob BADDER BOB is two Bad Bob pedals in one box. This allows cranking the first one to overdrive thesecond one, which can bring the volume down to a normal level, leaving great CRUNCHY distortion toneswithout all the compression you get from most dirt pedals. We can build these laid out like the large BICOMP(wide) or Mini Bicomp (narrow), in various colors. Some shady yet popular company builds a version of this, with nocredit to Jack Orman, and claims it's a Dumble pedal. SMH. ff782bc1db
