Our Story:

Clayboy’s Shave Ice was started by Scott Styer at his home in Catonsville, Maryland in 1992. Scott had spent the last couple of years living in Hawaii where he learned and perfected the process of making Hawaiian style shave ice. He was trained by the legendary Aaron Furujen who has run a similar shave ice business in Hawaii for 50 years. Scott had the idea of starting his own business back in his hometown of Bethesda, taking a relaxing aspect of island life back to the city. After operating successfully in the area for 30 years, Scott, now 70 years old, decided to sell Clayboy’s in 2021 due to the Pandemic. The business is now owned and operated by Bill and Dan McKinnon, who grew up eating Scott’s delicious shave ice and have stayed true to the roots and traditions  of Clayboy’s. 

Our Product:

Clayboy’s uses a special Taiwanese ice planer that shaves the ice to the perfect soft and thin texture.This texture allows the ice to absorb the syrup well, and holds the flavor throughout the cone as opposed to bleeding to the bottom of the cup. The ice is not simply crushed into small chunks like a normal snow cone. Clayboy’s currently has a menu of 15 flavors including kinds of fruit and other traditional desserts. Clayboy’s is 100% vegan, dairy free, and gluten free.
