Their Eyes Were Watching God Zora Neale Hurston
This novel is about a young black woman named Janie Crawford, who goes in and out of several relationships. It is set in ruralEatonville, Florida, in the early 20th century. Eatonville is an actual town that was incorporated as a self-governing black community in 1887. In the end of the novel, after the death of her second husband, Janie marries a man named Tea Cake, to whom she had a real attraction. She ended up murdering him after he tried to kill her because he was going insane after being bitten by a rabid dog. The people of Janie’s hometown immediately criticized her after her return, but her friend defended her. Janie is known as an independent, feminist black woman who defies gender stereotypes, a good example that younger people looked after. This novel was written in 1937 by Zora Neale Hurston, known as her best-written work and also considered a classic of the Harlem Renaissance.
