Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee takes place during the second half of the 19th century. Using the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek as a backdrop, this historical work examines race relations between Whites and Native Americans. The book focuses on the American Government’s treatment of the Sioux tribe. The book is written from the Native American point of view and talks about how the American Government breaks a treaty with the Sioux tribe, causing a Civil war. The book then talks about what happened during the war and how the war ended. Dee Brown was an American Novelist and historian who worked as a librarian for most of his life. Although not Native American himself, Brown’s writing from the Native perspective is influenced by his acquaintances with minor league baseball player Chief Yellow Horse and a childhood Creek friend. Brown rejected traditional descriptions of Native Americans that dominated popular American culture of his time.
