Columbia High School, located in New Jersey, is a Title 1 institution. Since the introduction of its Chinese program in 2017, the program has continued to grow. The district currently has six Chinese language teachers: two at the high school and two at each of the two middle schools. Over the past six years, enrollment in Chinese has steadily increased—from approximately fifty students at the high school in its early years to more than six hundred across the district today. This year, 210 high school students are enrolled in Chinese, reflecting the Chinese program’s continued expansion within the district’s world language curriculum.
The high school’s Chinese program emphasizes cultivating students' global awareness and values inter-school exchanges between China and America. Students have actively participated in numerous community and Sino-US exchange-related activities.
To further enhance cultural understanding, communication and cooperation the high school has also established the Chinese and American Friendship Garden and a sister school with a high school in Beijing to promote cross-cultural learning and host district-wide cultural events.
