Claris Platform Differences

Claris Platform Vs. FileMaker Platform Recap & Open Q&A

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSH66Z6scKM&t=116s

Hello, everyone welcome to another awesome day of FileMaker training. Today is a very important day because we're going to be having a very, very important conversation, a follow-up to the conversations we've had, and so who am I'm Richard Carlton, I'm the creator of fmtraining.tv. I have run a consultancy and been in the FileMaker business for more than I want to admit to anymore It's over 33 years. At this point, I've been around the block just a smidge, and we have a pretty good team here. That works because of the team that we have. It allows me to spend my time doing. Other things like creating training and one of the things I do in training is. I spend a lot of time trying to take complicated topics or abstract topics or topics that Claris management sometimes thinks things are simple, they are not, and my job is to frankly translate them into plain English or plain whatever language you have. There are questions here. I can see discord flashing away over here out of control. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go through. I think I spent about three hours on this last night. Four hours on this last night, Claris has not seen this. They don't know anything about this.

This is being operated and done outside of their purview without their blessing. This is just Richard out on my own doing what I do, but I have a history of making training more simple, more digestible, and that's the goal for today. What we're going to do? It is going to be, for the most part, a slideshow today, if we get to the point towards like halfway through where I'm done with the slideshow, we can do other practical demos, but the slideshow. This isn't just a slideshow. It's kind of this animated slideshow that we do in our training. It's why our training is so awesome, 100 hours of training if you go to fmtraining.tv, you can see all the animations.

We spend a lot of money on animation, so I'm going to make myself a little bit of a sliver here today. What we're doing today is an explanation and comparison and understanding. Fundamentally, if you're a developer - and you have built FileMaker solutions, and you're - maybe a brand new person or maybe a power, what I call a power junior, intermediate developer, a lot of you get the intermediate development, and you kind of stay there, because It's good enough. Then some of you are senior certified. I thought this presentation would not be useful to senior certified people: Josh Orman's the world, the whim, the courts, some other people, David knights, etc. Some people have been wrestling with this topic already. They already understand this information. I think, for the most part, I ran it by a bunch of other senior engineers-type people, and they appreciate this because it was unclear from what happened on Friday. So the goal today is to make it straightforward.

So, I will entertain questions if Margaret has one. Margaret's already seen this presentation once if she has an on-topic question, she can throw it at me, but I'm not going to be watching the conversation. For the moment. We will pick up the questions as we get to the end or if Margaret finds it very relevant, we'll stay on topic because I want to. I want everyone to understand this. If you don't understand this, I have failed. Today, I guarantee most people didn't understand it as a Friday night today, we're going to change the world as it has been up until this point, right? This is the world that we have lived in. Okay. This world has been changing since April, but it changed Thursday morning this last Thursday morning. So what I want to do is point out. This is the world we know we're comfortable with we understand some of us are learning it. Some of us have been doing it for a long time. I train in this, okay? So let's talk about Claris motto. Now I want to give kudos to angela case, who brought this up to me, and I thought it was sharp what he said to me. I'm going to extend and explain this Clarisse's motto, this used to say like trademark behind it simply powerful Software right they've had the workplace, innovation platform, uh, simply powerful software amazing stuff, whatever all the different taglines they've invented over the years because every time you have a new marketing department, they create a new tag line and everyone goes yeah. Yeah, that's great. This one was pretty good, simply powerful software. What ended up happening over the years - and I remember talking to some senior developers about this - the simply part kind of was not emphasized so much, or when they did simply, their idea of simply was the spreadsheet table view integration that a certain vice president thought was A great idea because we're going to be like excel because databases like excel not a forward-facing kind of thought process, they invested in the powerful part quite a bit. So for a lot of the training, you see we talk about here.

We talk about JSON javascript and API integration. Those are all examples, not a comprehensive list, but examples of powerful things that brought the platform power right brought platform power, so they didn't do too much in the world of simplicity. They focused on power. So if you look at the platform on the right side, this is some powerful stuff. It does some bad stuff. It does stuff other products can't do without much more money and investment. So that's why FileMaker is FileMaker is still very popular. The platform is awesome, but It's missing. Certain things and Claris had a new management team that came on board at Devcon of uh. Well, I'm just going to call Devcon of 2019, and one of the things they want to do is try to go back and address some of the things that the platform was missing. So the idea was to instead of focusing on the powerful part, we kind of have that, and we want to continue that. We don't want to stop that. But maybe we need to put some investment into simple or simply the simply part of simply powerful software. And that's where Claris studio and connect came from now, Claris connect launched, and the initial strategy was less than successful.

I'm being very diplomatic about that. The promise of Claris connect was great, but the execution was less than stellar, so that was one area where simplicity could come into the product line. The other area, of course, was Claris studio, so the idea was to bring powerful capabilities but with simple implementation right these are fundamentally what is Claris connect and Claris studio. They are capabilities that you can already do in FileMaker. Let's be clear, you can go to Zappier and do some coding and JSON API stuff. We spend a lot of time in our training discussing these advanced capabilities. You can already do these in FileMaker, the FileMaker platform right now. It already does them, but some of the items are not necessarily easy to do, and they're labor-intensive and, of course, if you have the money, you have the budget, a developer that's experienced. Maybe you, your experienced person someone's paying you you're happy to build these highly customized implementations, but what if we wanted to go back to that simply part of it, right? How do we do this? Simply? How do we make FileMaker useful for the people who are brand new for the people who download free the free version of FileMaker never seen it before? If the first thing they see is this JSON javascript API, a lot of the people downloading free are going to be like, ah, don't need it, not very good. It's too much for me. It's more. You can hear it right now, It's more than I need. I deleted it, so I'll let this go back to where we were in the slideshow, simply powerful software. We want to focus on this simple, so that's what these two things do. These two items are designed to augment the existing platform with simple implementations. If you're going to do an API integration, should you do it with the more con, the more programming sort of way with the javascript and the API calls and JSON things? Maybe it depends on your needs, or maybe you need something very simple, so the idea is that this is good. Clarisse is happy with this. This is what we need to add.

We don't have it yet. This does not replace this and vice versa. It never will not within ten years at the earliest, if ever, okay, just not possible. I think It's. How many times have you had someone say? Oh, you built something in FileMaker. We hate FileMaker, we're going to build it in insert oracle Microsoft SQL or something like that, and they try to do it, and they fail. I've seen two customers in 33 years ever replace FileMaker with SQL oracle 2. I've had about 500 people say they were going to do it. They all failed. Why? Because this is very cost-effective software that does a ton and people. Always they don't they don't understand how powerful it is just looking at it right. They just don't understand it. If you've been in the community for a while, you understand how powerful it is, so we want to keep all the powerful stuff we want to implement and augment it with some simple implementations. How do we get this in there oh, by the way, you know we have this thing called free that we want to stick in there too, and that's another piece that we have to figure out. We haven't talked about that, but Claris, I've been badgering. I remember having a face-to-face with Dominique, and we debated back and forth, and he invited me to lunch. I had lunch with him at the old building, and we had it there, and he was like, well. He goes. I have 65 000. What do I spend it on, you know he came up with a couple of different ideas where he had about 65 grand of extra marketing money. And during that conversation, we ended up talking about free and -, and there were a lot of complications of getting free loaded in there. Uh, Claris has finally got to the point where they think they can do it, but the problem is: is trying to glue this orange stuff into the FileMaker platform breaks things. It will cause things not to work. There will be problems, okay, and so it goes back to this north star issue.

We've discussed this if you've not seen any of my presentations. This is your first presentation. Claris has done several presentations where they say one of our guiding principles. is not to break existing implementations, so the whole idea is that they need to protect the FileMaker side, but we also need the new stuff, so they have to fork the platform. This is a this is the f-word, by the way. Some of you see my swear jar over here, so if you say uh fork the f word or FileMaker, you have to pay a dollar in here, and so I have to put increments of 100 bucks into the box. So real quick, the fork is, is this and somebody was like what's fork which fork and some of you very senior people already understand this. So the idea is that this is a fork. The idea is that you take software and duplicate it and split it, and then it becomes a slightly different version, for example, with FM Starting Point. We have a U.S English version, an Australian English version, an EU English version, and a UK English version because, guess what, all the flavors of English are not the same, so every time we have to make a fix. I have to have it done in four different spots because there are four different copies well, that's kind of what Clarisse is going to do, but they only need two forks, and so this is what's happening. This is what they kind of tried to explain on Friday, but it didn't happen on Thursday, so we have the existing FileMaker platform right. We have this Northstar. We don't want to break. So what we're going to do is we're going to everyone pay attention. This is where we're going to duplicate the platform across basically is the idea right we're going to bring it across, and so we make a copy of it and then, along the way for clarity, sake, we're going to call it Claris, and so you have two sides. So the site on the right is a side that we're going to hang out to protect and make sure we don't break anything. The sign on the left has the new stuff where things might get broken along the way, and that's what we'll talk about.

Of course, as we have these two sides, the two sides shouldn't talk to each other because that causes problems. I already had the reason this webinar came out. The other day someone said: well, I'm going to take the premium product, I'm going to take the premium product, which happens to be over here, and I'm going to connect it to all my existing FileMaker infrastructure that causes all sorts of problems, huge numbers of problems. It's not something that can be reasonably done, and so the idea is that we leave the FileMaker platform and we don't break it, and we're building the new technology over here. So we get the clearest cloud server and, more importantly, these two items right here. We get the Claris studio, which is this simple. It's an augmentation, a simple augmentation. We get Claris to connect, which, if it was priced right and had some additional features, it might be pretty awesome. There's a lot of potential with that.

We also get the free dropped in here, so suddenly we can choose one side or the other side. Now, almost everyone is out in the world. Right now, 98 of the FileMaker deployed copies of FileMaker are over here on this side. The file format is FMSP-12 with this new platform over here. It's essentially identical because you saw we copied it across, but it responds to an extension called dot Clarist. So the two sides don't communicate back and forth.  So if you copy a FileMaker pro, but you have a Claris server over here, they're not going to talk. If you have a pro on the left and FileMaker server on the right, they're not going to talk, they can't talk to each other. It's like FileMaker, 7. The fp7 file format to FileMaker 12 FMSP12, there was that kind of dividing line where things need to be broken apart, and that's where we are at with this now, you can decide that you want to use this platform over here. You take your FMSP12 file. You drag it over to FileMaker pro over here, and it converts it for the time being, It's a one-way conversion. I just simply say that because, at the moment, It's a one-way conversion, so make sure you make a backup copy because right now, once you go to Claris that file doesn't roll backward, It's a one-way conversion. It's the way. It's always been with FileMaker from two to three and three to four and six to 7 and 11 to 12 is always a one-way conversion. Never would go back the other way. So that's important.

This is where we get to the deciding point in this conversation for everyone here on the right side. I will simply say if I could put my hand over here and block this out for the moment, I would say focus on the blue. This is the platform. It's not changing, they're continuing to invest in it, and to give us upgrades, there is a 19.6 version of FileMaker. That's coming at some point, not sure when probably before Christmas would be my guess, but it has known capabilities. What can we do with FileMaker? Now? Maybe you're a junior developer, you don't know what you can do with it when I say known capabilities. If I grab him to court from saline - and I put him in a chair - and I tie him down, duct tape, him he's kidnapped, and I say wim tell me the known capabilities of FileMaker. He can repeat them from heart, they're a known commodity, and that's why things aren't broken on the left side. These items are broken immediately as of today no offline access. So if you have to have a copy of your FileMaker server and, for some reason, the internet doesn't work or is spotty or in the desert or somewhere else, that's a problem. You can't it won't work over here. There's no active directory or OAuth, which I need. There's no JDBC ODBC on-premise server over here. This item right here is Linux. Only we talked about this last week. We will talk about it a little bit today. If you want, okay, and also down here below, uh, the plugin developers need to convert their products to work here. So, right now, as an example, my company RCConsulting, which is a little bit different than the training company we uh, are using this over here. We have a site license for our 30 somewhat engineers that we have - and I don't want to move over here just yet, because these items have not been resolved yet Claris has the intent to resolve these items. . That was kind of the conversation I had with Rick Calman on Friday, where they're not setting any dates or deadlines on these items, and I at the end of the day until they ship it.

It's never a guaranteed thing. So they say our intention is that's their best intent. However, you know, until it ships, you know, It's one of those things I'll believe it when I see it kind of stuff, and I'm not being negative, I'm just saying It's. You know, whenever someone promises something in the future, like when I say I'm coming out with a starting point. I know I'm gonna come out with it, but most of you are hoping that I come out with the new version, and the timeline's a little squishy. I would say that Claris wants to resolve these items because if you can resolve and remove these items over here, then there won't be a big reason not to move from this side to this side because to move from the right to the left. You're an Organization, you have a server, and It's already a FileMaker service running FMSP-12. It's called FileMaker server, you're going to need a different server. A new build server, you're going to install the software over here, you're going to do a one-time conversion of the files, you're going to test it over here. Still, before you go live with it, you're going to want to make sure that you tested all the tricky spots like if you like, for example, at my company, the FileMaker system will talk to PayPal. Do some slack integrations things like that? I'm going to want to test to make sure that works because if someone pays me and buys training from me and they buy it through a credit card through PayPal, I still want that to work over here after we convert. So I'm going to go through a testing process on that. Please test right if you have a developer work with them to test it, but this is a separate server, they're not the same server before you say that no, you're going to need a separate box. If this is your on-prem server, It's a mac or windows server. This server over here is going to be Linux just the way. It is right now of the limitations that I have seen Claris talk about that we want to resolve the Linux server. One is not on their list of things to resolve, so if you don't like that, please don't vent to me, find the appropriate executive at Clarisse and let them know how you feel. I have no control, no influence, no, not even input over there. On what happens I find out what happens after all of us find out.

Okay, I just tried to organize it and make it understandable so offline access, they'd like to resolve JDBC and ODBC. So for me to move from my company with 30 people as an example, I need to have OAuth functionality solved, and I also need to have. I need to have offline access, frankly, because sometimes I use FileMaker locally at the airport right on my computer right without an internet connection. Now you can connect at the airport, the wi-fi I'm sure uh Chris Moyer and Wendy Corton people would say, that's a good place to have your passwords and stuff hacked and taken away. But you get the idea, you uh uh. If you have offline access moment at the beach, you want to sit and build something. You know, doodle in FileMaker. You need to build that ability. So I need offline access. I need OAuth, and I need 360 works, Jesse Barnum to fix his plugin, so they all work in Linux. Once that's done, I can migrate the company. What would that look like if I had a new server over here? We already have a test server running. We bought the software at full price. Last week I paid full price, like some random person off the street. Okay, I bought a five-pack. We put it on the system.

Now it's running right because I needed a clean environment that wasn't part of the developer playground test environment. After all, right now, Claris throws everyone into the into uh, the common developer sandbox. You have 500 people in the sandbox throwing sand at each other, uh arguing about their Tonka toys right in the sand, right? If anyone has kids or was remembered to be a kid, Tonka trucks in the sand are a lot of fun as the issues are resolved, you can evaluate whether you can move from one side to the other.

The idea down the road is that Claris should move these limitations and then that 95 of the community moves over to the Claris platform, and then the platform's kind of regel come back together right. Does that make sense so, as this becomes more amazing, because right now, Claris studio, It's got a lot of promise to do anything that I need, or my company needs right now? No, will it do something amazing and cool that I have to have? Probably I mean from the idea of dashboards to some other stuff. It could do some amazing simplified things for some, like my finance people in the company are not programmers. They would love to create dashboards and FileMaker without hiring one of my developers to do google charts with animations and stuff right, and so the finance people would like to drag and drop and do that. Well, if Claris studio, as an example as a possibility, could build a dashboard right, what, if your data was in the FileMaker server, all the orders of all the people who bought my training were in there? It could backfill into Claris studio, which is the database back in, and then the finance people who don't know how to program could go in there and drag and drop and make a dashboard. So they could see how the sales were trending or what was going on, or we had more international orders or local orders. Things like that. So there is a huge amount of upside possibilities of where this goes, but today immediately for me, I can't use it, and on top of it I don't have a compelling reason personally to just I've got ta. Has it got ta? Has it got? Ta has it I don't get ta have it this moment. I have it so I can demo it for all of my friends and colleagues out there, but maybe that changes between here and Christmas or November or January or whatever, maybe there's something so amazing.

I have to have it, and then I'm gonna be over here. Looking like hey, when are you gonna resolve these issues, so I can take my organization and move it over, and so the idea is that at some point, you're going to laterally move your platform, one side, the other side, and then I think there was a bit of uh pricing - and I think this is pretty close - that might be off by 20 bucks or something at the current time before the price increases go up. This right here is the standard 900 bucks a year for five people. This is about 25 more for this over here, okay, if Claris builds a dashboard that my finance people can use. I will buy this immediately as fast as possible, so they can have all the dashboard charting back and forth whatever they want, and I don't have to be bothered with it. They can do it themselves because it'll be a simple implementation. Two conversations are happening. Okay, I have a question here, and Josh Orman got into it changing from FMSP12 to Claris. Is that a technical or marketing thing? Its licensing and It's technical are what it is. It's not marketing, here's the problem, for example, one of the one issue I'm going to give you an example of this okay, and - and I know that I, let's just be I'm going to be real about this okay. This is because I don't work for Claris, I'm going to be very real about this. For example, we want free, okay, free free. Is this a great idea? Everyone has this idea that its pro, free, and I can do stuff with it. Okay, well, Claris can release free for free. If you need a server, you want to connect and share with people. So a bunch of free people is in the company. They go. Wow, it'd be great. If we could share data, imagine that, right, It's like the number one thing that FileMaker does is share data, right? We could share data well, free individually won't share it with anyone. It's you. So if you're talking to yourself like I am right now, then It's great for you, uh. But if you want to share it with your staff, you're going to need a server you're going to buy the Claris platform bundle. So that is free. And then you ups, you purchase up to get the five pack. However, it has to be different here because over here, the obvious can be very frank with you. The piracy on the FileMaker platform side is gross and out of control, and I mean that very seriously. And so, if you had free over here and then someone could steal a copy of FileMaker server one way or the other, then Claris would be killing themselves budget-wise because they'd have people who would, you know, save the money and and and not go down this road, There's a lot of important reasons to have this here, that's just one of them. That is just one of probably a hundred reasons that these platforms have to be separated, and that way, this is over here, It's kind of contained in its world and the Claris world, as It's contained in it in its world. It's not a marketing thing per se. It's to understand that people have to do a conversion because I had some of the I told you this come to me: go, I'm going to use premium, and I'm going to take it over here and use it with the FileMaker side.

And that's there's a lot of the issues and challenged with that and and and one of the things I want Claris to be successful. For them to be successful, we have to pay them. It's common sense, but they're not a government organization. It just gets money off the government, dole they're an apple, and they're very capitalistic, and they want their money. I think we should pay them. Therefore, piracy should be limited if, at all possible, this new system cuts back on piracy. It will help Claris make money and make the revenue they need to make right. That's just another. One item that's been resolved by having this issue. I see the issues with this. I understand why they're doing it, it doesn't mean It's fun because we had this world here, and now we have double the world with a set of limitations. I mean the whole idea, and I will grant everyone this. I would say that the goal of licensing has always been complicated. Licensing and complicated. We've heard that only repeated ad infant items for the last 20 years license complicated. Now licensing is double complicated, but it gets simple. It gets simplified. We have to.

We have to bite the bullet. We have to take our medicine before we get better. This allows them to separate this. We move over when we're able to move over. Some of us won't move over from one side to the other for a while, Josh Ormond. Whatever organization he works with, he's been very upfront, they have a lot of licenses and a big order, they're not going to be able to move over until a lot of these issues are resolved right, and I don't think for josh, It's even about the money. I think it was about that they're missing some critical uh capabilities that they need to have before they can successfully move over here without things being broken right, very, very, very, very important, and because, once again, I bought the Claris platform for full price uh. Last Friday, because I didn't want to get thrown in the sandbox with 500 other developers in their sample files and I needed a clean demo environment, I wanted to see what the customer would see. Claris had no way of providing that to me as a developer, so I went and paid for it. you can make of that. What you will do? Okay, I whatever it is.

We got a ton of questions, I'm trying to answer the questions here so. If we have Margaret you and you've been triaging, I have been looking at the questions. I'm not picked up anything yet, but okay, so there's kind of like a consistent team across the board. Will the FileMaker platform continue beyond 19? 6? Is it one that people want to be answered? I don't know. I would guess that they will see upgrades and implement if they resolve this pile list over here of issues, then, what's the downside to upgrading right beside, It's a little work. If they resolve these items, they resolve all of them. Then why not upgrade, right? If I had to guess again, I wouldn't have been blessed with this.

I would say that they would support an ad they'll, probably in 1907. I would guess, and in 1970 I would guess once again. Please don't quote me on any of this: they haven't said anything about 1907, but if they just chop this off uh and leave everyone floating in the ocean with a life raft, then good luck, we're leaving It's like when you fall off the cruise ship, And it just sails away, have a nice day. I don't see that happening. I don't. They are incentivized to get people to move over and to move over and be happy they're, not trying to alienate and aggravate the developer community. I mean, I think that's just a natural byproduct of how we got to where we're at, and the developers are a little more agitated than ideally would be the case. That being said, they're not trying to blow up the community and cause a problem because they want to sell this and have this be successful, they need the developers to be happy with the community to promote the product, we're at a kind of a Critical juncture right now, they've got to uh kind of motor through this list of limitations as fast as possible. I think some of the limitations will be resolved by January, but I don't know - and I couldn't swear to that - one way or the other anyway because I'm not an I'm, not a representative Claris. I don't know if you want to do there's kind of like some general overall licensing questions. Do you want to deal with that towards the end or now? Well, if It's a legit license, if It's, if people just want to vent at Claris, okay, I, as much as I like to say this: I do not work for Claris. I don't get a check from them at all, and so, as a result of that, if you have a complaint to file - and you want someone to pay attention to it, send it to someone who has a Claris uh dot com on their email address, which Would not be me right, so there are some legitimate questions. Is it not better to double license? Oh, okay, uh. I'm going to read this letter. Let me clarify something real, quick, and that might help me understand. What's going on for my company right now, my license is not due in may until May of next year. So for me, the timing is fine. The Claris platform is right here. If you buy this, you get the whole thing. If you buy the 900 right here, okay, you get the blue turquoise stuff over here. If you buy this one right here, you get all of it: minus the Claris cloud server, that's their custom server for you that they have that's your server. They have a cost of that. It runs the price up, just as e for a moment. You are going to run your own on-prem Linux server, okay, right or mac? What it doesn't matter, you're going to buy this over here, you get both platforms, you're going to run one or the other, or you'll run both, I guess to test and evaluate because remember you can run three servers right. That's part of the license! You get three servers as part of the license. You could have this, and this, and you could test right. So if you buy this, when you get just the cl the FileMaker platform, what we'll call the classic platform classic? It's not a word. They use. Probably another c-word I'll be telling Richard, you're not allowed to say the word classic, so the classic platform, but yeah, people want to know if there is an overlap in licenses, so we can test Clarisse while keeping our FileMaker stuff live uh. The overlap license is when you buy this one right here: okay, so, and it just on Friday, started to turn on so like, for example, It's not available for the solution.

Bundle agreement program - that's a bunch of you, take FileMaker. You put it on a vertical market solution. You resell it. That's not available. Claris has got a lot of infrastructure operations things they have to do to roll this out fully. It's not fully rolled out, but they decided to launch it Thursday last week, and so here we are having this conversation right so. It is what it is. I one of the reasons I bought it. It is because I wanted to see what the customer would see and when you get into it and you log into it, you can see that you can download these items here, or you can download and utilize these items here, which is kind of cool uh. If I buy FileMaker and after six months convert to Clarisse, will I get a refund? I have no, I'm okay, so you're asking about specific, listen in six months, the landscape of Clarisse's website and their policies regarding upgrading will change. A hundred times, okay - and so some of you are concerned that you're not going to get boned on the pricing. I would hope that you don't have a problem with the pricing. I don't have any guarantees in that worst-case scenario. If you want to upgrade and they don't, and they can't process you early, then you'll just wait until your license renews or whatever I don't know what else to do because they want you to move. They want you to upgrade. They want to get more money from you, so they're incentivized to figure this out, but I can tell you that they're not ready for that conversation. So next question: besides: what will it look like in three or five months, and can I get a 75 percent refund on them? Okay, that's all policy stuff that has not been communicated downhill. People are asking. Some people are asking if it would be better to buy it now before the price increase because there is a price increase across the board scheduled. I think a lot of you are going to have limitations that are going to prevent you from using this immediately. I mean, here's the reality: the ten prices. Listen! If you have a renewal in the next 60 days.

Yes, if you want to buy it early, buy it early. Okay, beyond that, I wouldn't get too excited about this because, for example, I think I think I can convert in January to this. Still, my site license renews in may. So, suppose Claris can't process me early. In that case, I won't Be converting because right now, for me to convert, what's the amazing feature that I need in this product, nothing, yet I think next year, at some point, there'll be amazing features in the clear studio o Claris connect that I have to have, but is there anything today that I have to have today. A lot of you are like like got to do it right now. It's like.

Can I take a breath to take a breath and step back I'll? Let you know when to get excited. If you want to know that right, but if you want to get excited now, that's fine, I guess, but I don't want to create unnecessary work for you, so Jacob Taylor. You want to come in on this a little bit. I would say this is on a trajectory of every what is this Claris said every two weeks, or so ten days of 14 days to 21 days, they're going to be releasing updates to Claris studio they're? Yes, they are on an if I remember the stream correctly, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure it was their intended. The software release cycle is currently full, we'll say, updates whatever. That means every four to six weeks for the studio. That was what I heard Thursday, and that's pretty quick, especially if It's a meaningful update between that yeah, yeah, and, of course, there's no way of knowing if it'll be meaningful.  I've. The progress they've been making in Claris studio is amazing. Is it something I need yet? No, they're making amazing progress, but I don't need it yet, but that will eventually change, even if this did amazing stuff today.

I couldn't use it anyway, because there are some gaping holes. My security system uses uh active directory or correction uh azure active directory, the online active directory. If I don't have that, I have to issue everyone personal passwords or rebuild our security infrastructure. It's like! Oh! No. I don't want to do that. So for me, I'm going to wait. I need to wait and Claris right now. I don't think there's any expectation from them that everyone's going to jp over here, I think if they had 10 percent of their customer base moved in the next three months. I think they'd be happy.

I mean, I think they'd be very happy, so this is going to be a slow roll. This is you. This is probably this conversation we're having here you're getting everyone moved over is probably years two-three years, I'm guessing, except for the people who never upgrade like I had someone the other day called me and say: hey Richard, I got FileMaker four. Can you help me convert them? I was like, no, they're like. Why didn't you take the money? Well, most of the time, if people have FileMaker 4 1, they're kind of fundamentally cheap people who don't want to put money into it, which means they don't want to hire a developer, they just want something free that's updated, so I can't help people like that. So there'll be people sitting on the FileMaker platform here for the next 20 years, probably uh. If they have an on-prem license on or not on-prem, a perpetual license right, they'll be there for 20 years I'll be long since retired, and someone will be saying hey. Can you upgrade me from FileMaker 19 to FileMaker 45.3, and they'll be like? Can RCC explain future costs for FM training subscribers, uh the training costs will mark whatever you pay right now is probably about what you're going to pay for our training? For those wondering about this, how do I pay for any of this or the upkeep on this if I go to the FM training, so you go to fmtraining.tv. If you come over to our bundles' button, you can see that we have bundles there's going to be a third bundle added.

The pricing will more or less be in line with what we have uh right now, there'll be a complete there'll be intermediate bundle. They'll be a basic bundle: you can choose whatever training level you want in the FM starting point. That is, we have the new. There is the new light version uh the 2022 design. It's the neomorphic design surface, It's different than the metro design service, which we had in 2018, 2019-2020 2022 has the neomorphic. We have the standard version of that coming together, It's in the final stages before we have that out. The door is kind of awesome, so It's kind of the definitive standard for CRM uh on the FileMaker platform, only because It's so prolific and It's free next question about Claris license, don't think so. We have some very disgruntled people in chat uh. We recommend that we send your disgruntlement to Claris directly. We can't are they disgruntled that they forked it or what they are doing most, It's mostly about the price, uh that I'm gonna read this. They offer a 25 discount for expired licenses, customers if they want to come back, they don't make a discount for the actual customer, we're paying for a big beta version.

Okay, so can I back up just a second on this? Can I there's a lot of disgruntlement, but can I frame this real, quick where'd, my where'd, my slideshow go understand that over here I am laying the tracks for where we are where it started on Thursday and where It's going? If someone said Richard, your license, is due today, I would not buy the new one personally for my company right now because it doesn't offer anything that I need at the moment, and it has things that will break. This is a time I'm not showing the time like. We should have a road here as we walk down the road together, holding hands and walking down the road. The value over here will go up considerably, and the limitations will go down, so your interest in moving over 25 10, whatever it is, won't be a factor because you're gonna want the stuff over here right now. I agree. Do I want it today, I'm going to play with it and test it am I going to buy 30 seats or 40 seats or whatever I need for my company? No, not today. For starters, they haven't given me an upgrade uh plan for my site, license to do that, and so I'm like so yeah. So for me personally. No! So, if we're, if you're getting the impression that you should do this immediately if any of you think you should do this immediately, please stop. Please go clean the kitchen or do something else leave this conversation because that's not what we're saying at all. This is an ongoing time, uh thing that will be like in six months. What will this look like in 12 months? What will this look like? Okay, that's the next major part of this conversation, January. It looks like one or two of the things are down are gone off of here, maybe, and Claris studio is becoming more interesting. What does it look like in 12 months, my guess in 12 months - I'm gonna want. It would be my guess, but I don't know, but I don't need it today, uh the only other comment is got was an interesting comment from Chris Moyer, FYI. I haven't dug into this yet, but the conversion of FMSP 12 conversion systems with custom theme styles smoked. Some custom styles during the conversion were looking to do. This should have a trial, conversion, and scrutinize impact on their styles and themes. That's a good point. I did it, and it didn't blow up a starting point, which is my test standard. But if you have some themes, listen, the product was forked, I don't even know if It's a forked fork, but from our perspective It's forked.

I don't know that they've changed anything with themes and styles, and it should be uniformly the same between 19 5.3 and because, so let me show everyone just as a developer. This is what you're going to be dealing with the right, you're going to have copies of FileMaker installed over here this one's 1953. I think I put the n ber on there, and then yeah, rename it. Thank you, and then this one is the current matching version of 1953, which is 40.0.1.26. Somehow we have to keep this in our minds. Going straight, Claris tried to say: oh, you're not going to have to worry about version bars anymore because we're going to worry about that. For you, I'm not going to say anything about that. But if you, Josh Ormond or whim to a court or Chris Moyer feel that version numbers might still be relevant in how you manage people, feel free to let the management at Claris know that, so somewhere, I'm gonna have to start a cheat sheet saying 40.0.1.26 equals 19.5.3. That's a little cheat sheet, and then a question from the Oregon dean things might break. Does that mean that the Claris or the FM side is included with Claris, i.e.? Don't change anything on the FM side, it won't break. My multi-year license expires in early January. This is where we are. We want this in their organdie. Yes, we want this in there if they just jack it in their things break, or everyone steals. The platform Claris doesn't make any money, and they go out of business. That would not be good either, right? Yes, so I'm over here waving my hands being very frothy, so to do this, they had to be basic and preserved and not break anything they had to leave the right side alone. So they leave this alone. They don't do anything to break it, and I'm going to play this for everyone, one more time to sell animation, because you missed this here, we go ready one two three: this is what happens right uh. They create the Claris platform. They take all their source files, and they duplicate them or copy them from our perspective, yes. Then initially, when you copy, it has the same name, but then, along the way, they decide to change the name because that way, It's clear, okay, yes, then they Change the extension, so the two sides are delineated right. There's a dword for you, okay, and so, as they add the items over here, if they break something, It's not the end of the world, they can fix it. But largely, I mean, that's kind of what this is about. If you have a very, very, very sensitive system, the two sides don't talk right, and we reserve the right side and, at the current time, these the items that are broke over here right and, if and during the conversion. If the styles, the custom themes, and shared styles or whatever have broken, then that would be an unfortunate uh side effect that we haven't seen yet there we go, and then, when you buy this one over here, you'll get the whole thing. It's a pretty solid concept.

The problem is, people see this, and they freak out because It's complicated. I know that a company that hosts FileMaker only mac minis lots of macs he's not happy yeah, I mean, listen, when Claris got rid of so back in the FileMaker, 14 or 15 or somewhere around there, they got rid of the shared hosting. So you would set up a server, and you would go into business, and you would host for people. You'd do share, he would do, and - and the problem is, is Claris had some security issues with that? They thought it was a bad idea, and they tried to just de-incentivize people from doing that, and some people out there kind of refused to take the clue. and you know - and it kept that business going, and if you're one of that kind of people and you're making money hand over fish, you're rich and famous because you've been doing shared hosting. That's awesome.I don't know anyone's ever made any money on it. On shared hosting legitimately in a real way, but eventually, either you're going to run your server, or Claris is going to run your server for you, it'll be one of the two things, or you'll outsource. A company will take care of your server, but you won't be living on a server with someone else. On the same virtual instance, shall we say all right, Jacob Taylor, any other questions we have we want to? I mean, we talked about we're about out of time anyway, but yeah, Mr. Taylor. No, I wasn't just answering a couple of people asked that were good, which is like.

Do you know we're going with the Clarisse server, uh? Do you know what on-prem means? Does that include an AWS, you know, self-built server or something? Yes, just stuff like that, so yeah yeah yeah, the Claris server is the on-premises. Right now, It's kind of funny. Can you go ahead and show your screen real quick? So notice that we have this labeling branding thing going on over here, Clarisse hasn't even finished implementing the labeling and branding coherently. Yet right. So let me just stop right here. So what you are looking at right here is the new side, the orange side of our diagram. This is right here. If I can find my annotation tool, I will draw it over here, this title should be Claris server. The word FileMaker should not be there because FileMaker implies that you're on that other side, and Claris implies that you're on the newer uh side, right? So this is, unfortunately, unfortunate because you can't tell which one you're actually on the right. If you looked at this, which one are you on, right, It's kind of got both words in it, right, It's one or the other, so anyway, I'm gonna undo that, so It's the same thing. So this is the Linux version. Here It's running on amazon ec2 on a large. I think It's the five-pack that we bought. So if you go to the user licenses or wherever it says, we have five allowable people, like that. It does not have that tab anymore. Actually, yeah! No, that would be on the admin tab, but it doesn't exist anymore. It's one of the things I was commenting on previously because you have to authenticate into the Claris id like the one on the account or probably the one that started it. I'm not sure, but part of the install process, rather than dealing with a license certificate file, is directly logging into the Claris id on the server and that it does kind of like OAuth does elsewhere. It does a little pass-back thing, and that's how you license the server, and you can't see it after that point. If you may have noticed here on the home screen, there's a team ID.

I don't know the significance of that n ber whatever, but, but beyond that little note it. It doesn't appear again, and I have questions, so Chris Moyer. Do you have discord on this computer on this? I do, yes. Can you pop it up because Chris had an uh Christian Schmidt who's, one of the smartest people I know asked another smart person that I know Christian Schmidt said: can you s up the changes that were made and Chris Moyer says all layouts and scripts and custom Minions get modification version, incremented uh accounts added three extended privileges removed, minim version changed to 40. So Chris, did you discover that through your hackery of the file, or did he use death? Yeah, upload? An FM diff report to Richard shows the effects of Claris conversion through your website upload link, yeah, It's in the uh. If you guys are wondering what we're talking about on the live training tab, we have a little upload doohickey that i've built yeah. It's something that's! Why, having some other people here that are smarter than yours great, so this is FM diff. It's got updated dates it converted. It changed the version, approximately the same size, three things removed some modifications and account, and privilege added that makes sense, yeah, and that they wrote they removed the uh extended privileges. I wonder if it doesn't yeah for something yeah well, yeah, that's interesting what they got rid of. I would love to yeah more of a detailed breakdown of them, so this is what we're talking about the extended privilege set. I guess it probably adds some accounting thing for Claris id and removes local accounts, so extended privileges are quite interesting. I wonder what the new one is. This is, uh we're looking at Claris pro. Currently, this is a copy of FMSP lite. X8. You can see hosted on the Claris server I set up on Friday last week, interesting. Well, I suspect that someone will come up with a topic, and then we'll have to have that person on our show to talk about how to cartwheel the file backward. Although once again, you know, I think It's less of an issue now, because if you're going to convert a file, then you know, you should know that you're going to be on that platform and you're happy with the platform and if you convert it, make sure You have a backup copy of it before it does. The conversion right common sense mark says r reauthenticate 10 is an FMSP. 12 is not in Claris. That might be one. That's removed, yeah, yeah! Well, the FM authenticates. I guess they don't need it, right? I have to still wrap my head around the security. I wonder if they perma-token you from the Claris ID side, yeah yeah. We had something like that with the old. What was it called a FileMaker id for a minute early in the cloud two launch cycle, or whatever that was, and if you checked the that check box in the file options, where you can, let people save credentials which right back in the day, would have been Your username and password saving in your like your mac, keychain or whatever, so that when you fire up a database, it just logs in for you automatically they kind of shimmed that same concept into the old one.
