The session introduced FM Starting Point 25 (FMSP 2025), the latest version of RCC’s free FileMaker-based CRM system. Hosted by Richard Carlton and Miles, the discussion covered new updates, version differences, bug fixes, and customization options.
FM Starting Point 25 is organized into three editions:
Light – Simplified version ideal for beginners and demonstrations. It omits mobile layouts and uses serial IDs instead of UUIDs.
Standard – The main version used by RCC for new projects, featuring QuickBooks and MirrorSync integration.
Enhanced – Exclusive to FMTraining.TV’s Complete Subscription, adding “SideNuggets” — hidden developer tools and advanced features like PDF saving and purchase history popovers.
The update mainly includes minor bug fixes (broken buttons, tooltips, scripts, and anchoring) and proper version labeling for 2025. A README file in the download lists all fixes. Older versions remain available on the website, going back to FileMaker 11/12.
Richard emphasized that FMSP is a starting framework, not something to upgrade existing systems with. Developers should use it for new projects, as migrating from older versions isn’t supported. The product has been maintained since FileMaker 10, representing years of development investment — over a million dollars.
The team also warned users against unauthorized reselling, sharing a case where someone sold unmodified copies for $2,000. Redistribution is only allowed if substantial modifications are made.
Miles demonstrated customizations like custom menus and security scripting to hide “stealth” projects from users while maintaining visibility for admins. They discussed record-level security for better protection in sensitive environments, like aviation maintenance, where regulatory compliance is crucial.
The session also highlighted a training example built on Starting Point Light: an inventory system for Big Valley Aviation. It includes parts tracking, SMS notifications for low stock, and video tutorials integrated into the interface.
Finally, Richard discussed emerging AI integrations, mentioning Assembly AI, a low-cost service used for transcription and context-aware data entry within FileMaker solutions. He noted that while Claris’s built-in AI tools are still limited, third-party AI APIs already offer practical value for automation and speech-to-text workflows.
