A Cranach portrait showing a red split brim hat and goldhaube, currently in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremburg. This painting was originally Salome with the Head of St. John the Baptist.. The head of John the Baptist was depicted on the lower section of the panel. This section was sawn off because it was felt to be too repulsive.
I cut out all the (Medium) pattern pieces in leftover green wool to verify sizing.
Following the 1/2" seam allowance, my first test hat ended up way too large. Circumference was 32" instead of 22".
Asked for help via the Landsknecht Sew Along group. Decided to use the XL pattern to fit over Wulsthaube. Adjusted the bottom inch of crown to get the right circumference.
Using what I learned from the green test hat, I adjusted the circumference of crown to correct (26") measurement. Steamed and finished seams.
The next day I was able to sew the brim pieces together and attach to crown.
Sew an identical crown out of linen and fell seam to cover interior seams.
I had to ask for help again on properly attaching the feathers. I used the suggestion to push a sturdy needle (I used millinery needle and sailmaker's palm) through the base of each feather in 2 places to sew to crown.
Wearing the final product (without a wulst) with (curling iron) curled feathers and pewter brooch.
