Based on what worked on prototype 1 and Kolfinna's preferences, I stitched the metal
"wreath" ring around the edge of the heavy buckram. I covered the ring with dommette to soften the edge. I started with a small opening and custom cut to fit her head.
In order to get the shape and sizing correct, I started with clip art. Decided this was too many leaves and cutouts.
I cut a larger laurel leaf template out of cardstock and used this to layout the cutouts on craft paper.
After cutting the design out of craft paper, I laid the template on top of the brim to judge size.
After transferring design with chalk, I used sharp fabric scissors to cut out the laurel wreath from wool.
I sewed around each leaf to more solidly connect the silver silk to black wool and stabilize the shapes.
I wanted to ensure the crown would maintain its circular shape because of the laurel wreath design. To keep the shape, I top stitched around the edge.
The wool fabric to cover the brim was cut 1" wider than the brim. Next I cut a slit about every inch to help the curve around the brim.
Because the head opening in the brim is oval and I wanted to maintain the circular top of crown, I sewed crown to top brim fabric first. Next I sewed top brim fabric to bottom brim fabric after tucking the excess in and sewing along the brim edge.
I once again used an awl to punch holes in the shaft of ostrich feather to secure to brim by pushing through buckram and fabric with sailmaker's palm. I also added a couple stitches near the edge of the brim to keep the feathers in place.
