DAVID CHO SCHOLARSHIPS
Cho Scholarships awards $1,000 each to two qualified MSU students. Recipients will be elected based on academic performance and financial need. Special consideration will be given to the students who have either promoted an understanding of Korean culture or who are U.S. veterans, ROTC members, and/or active members of the military.
APPLICATIONS OPEN MARCH 1ST
ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION
TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A SCHOLARSHIP, AN APPLICANT:
Must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at MSU during the scholarship year.
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Has promoted an understanding of Korean culture through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities.
A COMPLETE APPLICATION CONSISTS OF:
A completed online application form
A copy of the official transcripts
A 250-300 word essay, which addresses 1) how you help promote an understanding of Korean culture and 2) how your activities advance MSU’s mission of building and supporting an inclusive community.
One recommendation letter from your professors or advisors directly sent to cksmsu@msu.edu by June 30.
UPON NOTIFICATION OF THE AWARD, A RECIPIENT:
Must express acceptance and appreciation of the award by writing a letter to donors within six weeks of notification.
Will receive the first $500 into the student account after the letter is received. The remaining $500 will be deposited after attending the Global Korea Award ceremony in October.
RICHARD KICHU & JOAN SOJEON MOON SCHOLARSHIPS

DRS. CHI CKS FACULTY FELLOWSHIP AWARD
The Council on Korean Studies (CKS) is pleased to continue Drs. CHI CKS Faculty Fellowship Award, conferred on MSU scholars in recognition of their exemplary research, teaching, service, or outreach activities related to Korea. This includes but is not limited to research, curriculum development in pre-existing or new courses, study abroad course development, and any programming, outreach, and service that promote inclusive campus and communities. The award aims to recognize the accomplishments of MSU scholars, support their professional endeavor, and encourage their engagement with the Council on Korean Studies. Preferential consideration will be given to academic activities related to Korean contexts.
ELIGIBILITY FOR NOMINATION
MSU faculty, academic staff, and postdoc fellows with current CKS general membership may nominate others or self-nominate for this award. CKS membership is open to anyone and there is no membership fee. Members are strongly encouraged to participate in CKS’s programming and outreach efforts to promote Korea. For example, CKS may ask its members to share event announcements within their networks and ask for help in organizing events including the Global Korea Award, Korean Night, Korea Week, etc.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SELECTION
Those nominated candidates must hold a CKS membership. Upon nomination, CKS will reach out to nominees if they’re interested in CKS membership.
NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
Each year’s nomination cycle will open in the first week of March and close on June 30. To nominate and be selected, CKS membership should be obtained prior to March 1st.
Required materials include:
A short description of the nominee’s work and its importance
CV of nominees or any related materials of candidates
The selection committee, which consists of at least four current CKS members, will review and make the decision by July 15. The Committee may ask the nominee(s) for additional information if necessary during the review process.
AWARD FUNDING
The award recipients will be awarded $1,500 of research funding and a certificate of recognition at the annual Global Korean Awards ceremony in October. The recipients are expected to attend the Global Korean Awards ceremony and give a short acceptance speech.
