Foreign Education Evaluation: All education received outside the United States, must be evaluated before submitting it to the Department with your application. The Professional Engineer Section will accept education evaluations only from NCEES Credentials Evaluations. No other credential evaluation services will be accepted. No credit will be allowed for education submitted without an educational evaluation. General Information:

The following instructions summarize the requirements for licensure as a Professional Engineer, but they are not intended to apply to every situation. The applicant is responsible for complying with the current requirements of the Professional Engineers Act and the Board Rules and Regulations. If conflicts arise, the Professional Engineers Act will take precedence.

Neither U.S. Citizenship nor California residency is required for licensure; however, disclosure of your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is mandatory. Professional Engineer Licensure Available in California:

There are three categories of Professional Engineer licensure available in California: (1) practice act, (2) title act, and (3) title authority. The practice acts are Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Practice act means that only a person appropriately licensed with the Board may practice or offer to practice these branches of engineering. The title acts are Agricultural, Chemical, Control Systems, Fire Protection, Industrial, Metallurgical, Nuclear, Petroleum, and Traffic Engineering. Title act means that only a person licensed by the Board in that branch of engineering may use the title in any manner. The title authorities exist for two sub-branches of Civil Engineering: Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. A title authority indicates a proficiency in that field greater than what is required for Civil Engineering licensure. Applicants who meet all licensure requirements, including passing the required exam(s), will be issued a license in the branch of engineering for which they applied.

Eligibility and Experience Requirements:

An applicant for licensure as a Professional Engineer must meet the qualifying experience requirements outlined in Business and Professions Code sections 6751(c) and 6753 and Title 16, California Code of Regulations section 424. Review all applicable laws and regulations to confirm that you meet the qualifying experience requirements before you submit an application to the Board. Qualifying experience must be completed by the date of application submittal and is calculated on an actual time basis, not to exceed forty hours per week. If education is used as a part of the required qualifying experience, the actual work experience must be gained after graduation.

It is the applicant's responsibility to submit a complete application. A partial application will not be evaluated. The application must demonstrate that an applicant is fully qualified for licensure.

All applicants are required to supply the Board with a full set of fingerprints upon submittal of an application for licensure/certification. If an Agricultural, Chemical, Control Systems, Electrical, Fire Protection, Industrial, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Nuclear, or Petroleum Engineer applicant has submitted fingerprints with a previous application to the Board, resubmittal with a subsequent application is required if it has been 24 months or more since the last submittal of fingerprints. Civil Engineer Applicants

Traffic Engineer Applicants

All applicants are required to supply the Board with a full set of fingerprints upon submittal of an application for licensure/certification. If a Traffic Engineer applicant has submitted fingerprints with a previous application to the Board, they do not need to resubmit fingerprints with a subsequent application. The NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) record may be accepted as verification of an original transcript from a U.S. school if the record copy is legible. It can also be used to verify licenses and examinations from other states, work experience and reference information. Note - It is still necessary for applicants to complete the application form in its entirety along with the completed Ethics Examination.

We have a new Online PE Application System for the first initial part of the application process. This system allows submittal of the application form, application payment, Supplementary Experience Record (SER), and the Ethics Exam. We are working to add the remaining items to this online system. Until the system is complete, the remaining items must be submitted through the standard paper process. Refer to the checklist for a complete list of all items to be submitted. An applicant may also contact the board to receive paper copies of the application forms via regular mail. Please note, the Board does not accept handwritten applications. All applications must be typewritten.

Applications and nonrefundable application fees for professional registrations must be received in the Juneau office 30 days before board meetings. Applications must be mailed to the address on the application. Applications cannot be accepted via email due to confidential personal and payment information within them.

A spouse of an active duty member of the Armed Forces of the United States assigned to a duty station in Kentucky should complete the paper Endorsement Application below, have an up-to-date NCEES Record (with a license verification from another state, or licensing jurisdiction) transmitted to the Kentucky Board, and supply the following information with their application to become licensed without paying an application fee:

The WV State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers will only accept application forms that print out exactly as the ones provided on this site. If the forms do not print out on your printer EXACTLY as they appear on the screen, contact the WV Board office to request hard copies be sent to you through postal mail. All applicants for licensure must initially submit Form 1 along with the appropriate licensure and first registration fee. You must answer all questions and provide all information requested unless otherwise indicated. Failure to accurately complete all required parts of the application will delay its review. Additional forms below are required based on the licensure requirements of the profession. Do not use Form 1 to renew your existing license.

You must have filed an application for licensure as a professional engineer in New York and must be legally qualified to practice in the state or country in which you currently reside or have a place of practice, or in your previous residence or place of practice. Interim practice will only be approved for a limited time to allow the Department time to review your application for licensure. If you are approved to practice for an interim period, you will not be allowed to claim or in any way state that you are providing services as a professional engineer licensed in New York State.
