Marshalia Scarlet Abadeer was the second youngest born during the Mushroom War to Hunson Abadeer and Elise, being only five minutes older than her twin brother Damian. While Elise was a human woman, Hunson was a demon lord of a hell-like dimension known as the Nightosphere. For the first few months of her life, Marsha lived with her mother as well as her eldest sister, Marceline. However, shortly after her mother got sick, Marsha and Damian was sent to live with her father.
Marsha grew up in the Nightosphere with her father, brother, and older sister, Sarah. Marsha had a very lonely childhood. Aside from her siblings, Marsha didn’t have any friends. While her father did often arranges playdates for her with her cousin Heather who was around the same age as her, Heather took the opportunity to torment both the three of them. So for the most part, Marsha would end up preferring to spend time with her siblings, her toys, and the animals she would find around the mountain her father's castle was built into.
In addition to this, Hunson wasn’t always the nicest to her, often being one of the individuals he would lash out at. Despite this, Marsha was very attached to her father due to the sudden loss of her mother and desperately longed to be close with him.
When she was 8, her father began to train her to join the family business (ruling the Nightosphere). This included learning how to use dark magic, something Marsha deeply desired. As she was learning magic, Marsha began hearing a voice in her head. The voice called itself Eris and it was a by-product of the magic Marsha was learning. But aside from learning magic, ruling the Nightosphere wasn’t something she wanted to do but due to her desire for his approval as well as her desire to be close to him, Marsha went along with his plans for her up until her 12th birthday.
When she became 12, Marsha began to change from being a sweet little girl to a nightmare of an angry teenager. She would do whatever she could to avoid her father, even stealing food so she wouldn’t have to eat meals with him. And even when she was around him, she was nothing but combative with him. All the while, the voice began getting stronger as it fed off of Marsha's anger and would continue to grow stronger throughout Marsha's early teens.
When she was 13, her dad set her up with Chase Zagreus, a son of demon nobility. Marsha hated Chase but due to her dad, however, she had to deal with Chase frequently. It was around this time when Marsha met a teen demon named Veronica, who she quickly befriended and bonded over crappy home lives and books. It wasn’t long until she began to have feelings for Veronica and while Veronica reciprocated her feelings, they didn’t act on them due to Chase and Marsha’s dad.
Things came to a head when she was 16 when she got into a massive fight with her dad. Marsha doesn’t remember what she did or what she did. But the next thing she remembers is waking up in her bed. What Marsha doesn’t realize is that Eris came out during that fight and took control. Eris unleashed a powerful blast of magic, using Marsha’s soul as it’s power source. When the blast depleted…so did her soul. Upon realizing this, Hunson uses dark magic to give Marsha a new soul. Remembering the fight they had, Marsha became terrified. Marsha, along with Damian and Sarah, runs away from the Nightosphere. This also effectively ends her ‘relationship’ with Chase.
The siblings wander around for hundreds of years until they come across a cottage that they make their home. By this point, the trio are reunited with their older sister, Marceline, and Marsha (in particular) befriends Marceline’s then-girlfriend Princess Bubblegum, who she bonds with over their intelligence despite their science vs. magic dynamic. Things started crashing down as Bubblegum slowly began to prioritize managing the Candy Kingdom over her relationships. Sometime after Marceline and Bubblegum break up, Bubblegum finally manages to push Marsha away. This would leave their relationship strained for many years.
Sometimes after this, Marceline begins dating Ash, who begins to drive a wedge between Marceline and her sisters. Around the same time, Marsha reunited with Veronica and her brother, Jason, who she originally met in her early teen years. While they didn’t know each other well back then, Jason took Marsha’s current situation with her sister and used it to make a move on her.
Marsha and Jason entered a romantic relationship that quickly turned toxic. Jason was manipulative and possessive of Marsha. He would often assault her, pressure her into doing things she wasn’t comfortable with, whittle down her self-esteem, and cheat on her constantly. Despite both Veronica and Sarah telling her that Jason was bad for her, Jason’s manipulation kept Marsha with him. The only thing that managed to break Jason’s hold on Marsha was when Jason assaulted one of her dogs (Autumn) out of annoyance. Marsha and Jason got into a fight and when Jason slapped her, that resulted in Marsha finally beating the shit out of him and breaking things off with him.
Sometime in the past, Marsha met Melanie who she ended up befriending and bonding over a love of books. While they began to casually date Melanie, the trauma from her relationship with Jason began to affect her relationship with Melanie. When Melanie decided that she wanted to take their relationship to the next level, Marsha panicked. Marsha would end up ghosting Melanie, causing the other teen to end up heartbroken and withdrawn.
The way she ghosted Melanie broke something in Marsha and instead of talking to Sarah or Damian or Veronica about it, Marsha ran back for the Nightosphere. But instead of going back to her dad, she began to rent a room under the name "Melissa Cornbread". While she mostly stayed in her rented room at first, Marsha eventually got the idea to join a gladiator fighting ring that offered cash prizes for matches one. This is where she met Jade, a demon who was fighting in the same gladiator ring. Over the next few hundred years, Marsha and Jade entered a secret relationship. Eventually, however, Marsha came to realize that her current situation wasn't good for her. She broke things off with Jade ambically, checked out of her rented room, and returned to Ooo.
Sometime in the past, Marsha begins working as a witch, selling hexes and potions. In addition, Marsha ends up becoming an informant for Joshua and Margaret, a pair of talking dogs who ran a paranormal investigation industry. This would lead to her being deemed a traitor by the demons that ran into the investigators, despite Marsha having been previously looked down upon by other demons due to her half human heritage. Marsha continued to inform to Joshua and Margaret up until they decided to retire so they could raise a family. Marsha feels that she has hit a dead end in her life.
