Cisco Router Default Password

Till then I'm trying to access my router via the switch ports. I can see the router on 192.168.1.1 using SSH and HTTPS. The problem is the default password for the unit on the Cisco site doesn't work. I've found a website with a table of different cisco default passwords using cisco, Cisco, admin, Admin, administrator, and Administrator and I cannot get logged into this thing.

- Hmm, when using the console the router will come up and display a Router > prompt , from which further configurations can be done, meaning the 'enable' command can be entered then without a password. Guess console access may be a requirement here.

I'm unable to find the default username and password to do the initial configuration and the link appears to be for configuring the web service on the router. Is there something I'm missing from this page?

NOTE: Be sure to change the password to something you can easily remember. After rebooting, the default password will not be accessible unless you add it back to the list of passwords. The passwords will be restored to the passwords configured on the switch

That table *seems* to be mostly (if not all) residential and/or small business type devices. I suppose those are more likely to contain default credentials than enterprise type devices such as ASR/ISR routers, Catalyst 3850/9000 series switches, ASA/Firepower, etc.

Simply head over to your Cisco router login page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254), and enter the username and password combination from the list. Some authentication backends -- like RADIUS -- always need a username field. If we use those authentication backends to authenticate the enable mode category (using a configuration like aaa authentication enable default group EXEC-RADIUS) then the router supplies the backend with $enab15$ in the RADIUS User-Name field.

The username for devices that have default authentication credentials or have not fetched configuration will be the serial number (upper case letters and dashes) with no password. Authentication credentials should be changed to have a strong password after their initial use. Please see the Changing Log-In Credentials section below.

As mentioned in the Accessing the Local Status Page section above, the default credentials for the local status page are the serial number of the device (upper-case letters with dashes) for the username, and a blank password. After their initial use these default credentials should be modified to use an administrator-defined password. Navigate to Network-wide > Configure > General > Device configuration and provide a strong password. This password can then be used with the username "admin" to access certain pages, including the local status page. Note that the password you set will apply to all devices in your network.

But what if we want to retain the existing configuration on the router? Another solution is to perform a password recovery on the router. We will discuss how to restore our Cisco routers and switches to the factory defaults and also how to implement password recovery on them.

The login and password patterns are also applicable for login/password prompts displayed duringreload(), switchover() services. Now try to log in the privileged mode again (type enable in the user mode). First, try the password digitaltut again; the router will not accept this password anymore. Now type digitaltutSecret and we can login! (make sure you capitalize the letter S).
