Nel corso degli anni la DC Comics ha privilegiato una pluralità di continuità narrative, spesso indipendenti tra loro, nelle quali film e serie televisive convivono senza necessariamente condividere lo stesso universo narrativo.
DC Extended Universe (DCEU) è il principale progetto cinematografico e comprende film dedicati ai principali supereroi della casa editrice.
DC Universe (DCU) è il nuovo progetto che si propone come un vero e proprio riavvio dell'universo cinematografico e televisivo della DC, con una continuità condivisa che integra film, serie televisive, animazione e videogiochi.
Accanto agli universi condivisi, la DC ha continuato a produrre numerosi film autonomi ambientati in continuità indipendenti che adottano un approccio più realistico o autoriale, utilizzando i supereroi come strumenti per affrontare temi politici, psicologici e sociali piuttosto che come protagonisti di un universo condiviso.
Parallelamente si è sviluppato un vastissimo comparto televisivo, iniziato già negli anni Cinquanta e successivamente ampliato con produzioni diversificate convogliate nel recente Arrowverse con frequenti episodi crossover alle quali si aggiungono produzioni più adulte e autonome che esplorano registri narrativi molto differenti.
