FF Real is based on the early static grotesques from the turn of the century, such as Akzidenz Grotesk and Franklin Gothic, but with a more human touch and improved proportions. Spiekermann, who is known for his influential typefaces such as FF Meta and ITC Officina, wanted to create a font that was "not too cold, not too warm, not too round, not too square". He started sketching the letters on paper, then passed on the font data to du Carrois, who cleaned it up and completed it. Meiners joined the team later and helped with the design of the Cyrillic and Greek extensions.
FF Real has a large x-height, short ascenders and descenders, open apertures and slightly rounded corners. These features make it easy to read on screen and in print, even in challenging conditions. The font also has a rich character set, supporting over 200 languages, as well as various OpenType features such as ligatures, fractions, alternates and stylistic sets. FF Real is a versatile and modern font family that can be used for a wide range of applications, from editorial design to branding, from web design to signage.
