As a highly diverse population with 23 million members, Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have significantly contributed to American history, society, and culture. In 1992, Congress passed a law that designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. While the contributions of AAPI have been widely recognized, their communities still face stigmatization, discrimination, and even physical violence. To help the public better understand, recognize, and celebrate the contributions and heritage of AAPI communities, the Ames AAPI organizations have decided to hold their first Essay Contest in 2022, with the aim to promote iversity, equity, and inclusion in our society.
Suggested topics include, but not limited to the following: Defining the AAPI cultures; life stories of yourself or someone you know as an AAPI member; contributions of AAPI in building the nation and society; struggles and challenges; better ways for coexistence; international perspectives of AAPI, etc.
