Kinderspiel

for flute and piano (2011)

Conor Nelson – flute, Thomas Rosenkranz – piano

Program note:

Kinderspiel [child's play] was written after witnessing many play dates between my toddler son and a pair of twin girls from the neighborhood. In the piece, the flute plays the role of my inquisitive yet impatient son, while the two hands of the piano represent the docile, mild-mannered twins doing their best not to be bothered by him. The flute player and pianist are acting out a scripted play date, at times playing different music in parallel, while at other times learning to share the same music with one another. The various toys in play building blocks, trucks, a rocking horse and a toy tea set are all depicted by the musicians using distinct gestures, sometimes by extraordinary means.
