In which I attempt to boil several thousand Christmas songs in my library down to their purest essence - for no apparent reason other than dorks like me like making lists and dorks like you like reading them. And, as long as we're being honest, lists like these are subjective in the extreme; this is little more than what I like, and there's no scientific proof that these are "the best." Why are any of these songs better than, say, Joe Turner's cool "Christmas Date Boogie"? Hard to say, but I think they are (barely).

All the same, my selections aren't random, and I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to the table. I cast my net broadly, choosing as many different artists and song titles as possible. But, as should be evident throughout Hip Christmas, I am biased in favor of loud, fast, and catchy music. So, despite my interest in jazz, lounge, and reggae music, for instance, there's little of it below. For instance, I excluded (with great reluctance) standards by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and my beloved Carpenters. Nevertheless, I ended up with 100 songs I can recommend without reservation to folks who want to rock, roll, boogie, swing, jump, and/or jive their way through Christmas. Got yer own list? Drop me a line...

"Carols were primarily art songs in nature with spiritual or religious themes. As time went by, they became more about the Nativity of Christ. The carols associated with Christmas tended to survive. By the 16th century, the Christmas carol was here to stay.

"Christmas is a singing season," Harland said. "It may be the most sung about season of all. Almost everyone will sing during the Christmas season at one point or another, even if they don't normally sing at all. The familiarity of the songs is the main factor with this."

A Provenal carol from the 17th century, Un Flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle tells the story of two milkmaids who discover the baby Jesus and his mother in the stable. They run to a nearby village with great excitement and tell the inhabitants, who then rush to see the new arrivals. The lively music was originally intended only for dance, and this is one of several French Christmas songs that were later translated in English, as Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella.

At the other end of the spectrum we find many hugely popular French Christmas songs that first came out in the 20th or 21st century and became enduring classics. Possibly THE most well-known one is Petit Papa Nol, by Tino Rossi. Almost every child in France sings it at the holidays, eagerly awaiting the gifts Papa Nol brings. Enjoy this classic video of the chanteur himself, from 1946.

Iconic songbird Edith Piaf may not be the first to come to mind when thinking of French Christmas songs, but this number has become a beloved staple. Recorded in 1951, the songs follows les enfants de la rue (the street children) as they too experience the magic of Christmas despite the cold and the wind. This version has easy to follow lyrics to sing along.

Although it has been covered by many artists, including Tino Rossi and many others, this song was first recorded by French actor and singer Fernandel in 1956 for the film Honor de Marseilles. It has become one of the most popular French Christmas songs ever since.

The holidays are generally associated with family, presents, religious merriment, lights, and decorations. But another very important element we often associate with this time of year is music. Whether caroling with neighbors, listening to songs at church, or watching the Christmas episode of Glee, the music of the season helps make the season.

What about the song Angels We Have Heard On High? Or the song Hallelujah?

They do not sound like Christmas songs to me. Also, what about Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire? These are a few songs that sound like non-Christmas songs to me.

Thanks

The origins of Christmas songs dates back to around the 4th century when some of the first Latin Christian hymns were written about Jesus Christ. These early hymns were sung during church Christmas celebrations and eventually evolved into the Christmas songs and Christmas movies we recognize today.

I was working on a post about a cultural puzzle - why is it that over half of America's favorite Christmas songs were written by my people, the Jews? Before I'd finished the first draft, NPR's Here & Now aired a segment on the topic, "A Goyische Christmas to You" (here's a link):

It delightfully covers an annual show by the singer/songwriter Steven Blier, and explains that many of the finest songwriters of Tin Pan Alley and Hollywood were Jewish and that they responded to America's brisk demand for Christmas songs. Let me speculate further. I'll start with the fact that the Jewish population of New York quadrupled between 1890 and 1920, as Jews fled pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe. Once past Ellis Island, they found work where their skills were transferable (for example, sewing in the garment district). As it happened, New York was the center of the American songwriting industry, it spread songs mainly through sheet music, and Jews of the Pale were unusually likely to be able to read and write music. Further, the Jewish Pale produced not only violinists like Heifetz and pianists like Horowitz but also a musical theater tradition. While the Tsar was banning Jewish theater in Russia, a refugee from Ukraine named Boris Tomaschefskywas making New York the world's capital of Yiddish-language theater (his grandson, by the way, is conductor Michael Tilson Thomas). e24fc04721
