Viking Age Trade: the Russian River ties that bound Europe to the wider world.
The first item for my Portfolio is the paper I worked on for my Applied Social Science Capstone class, this is the culmination of about a year and a half worth of historical research on Vikings and Viking Trade in Russia, which I had started two semesters before in a lower level class. This is the pinnacle of my research and research presentation in paper form, I wrote this paper summarizing that trade, peoples, and movement of ideas that happened in the Russian River systems of Eastern Europe – during the Viking age and beyond -- had impacts on the world more than you may initially think. I also wrote this paper to be accessible to the layman of history, which in my opinion is the key audience that we need to be making out research available to as historians. This did involve trying to tie in things like popular culture and a story telling approach to history that helps to make the facts and information more accessible. The finds of this paper help show several key things a. people and cultures change over time, b. the Vikings did a lot more than just raid – playing a key role in global trade and expansion of ideas, c. we use our past to justify our present, d. Our global system isn’t as new as some would like for us to believe it is. I will also be presenting this project at the 2021 National Conference for Undergraduate Research.
The second item for the portfolio is the Student Legal Services plan and its accompanying motion, which I wrote up for the Stout Student Association -- or the Student Government at UW-Stout. This document I hope shows off my dedication and care when crafting an initiative, making sure that it is thoughtful, easy to interpret, and well structured for future years. I used several key skills and connections to help make this plan a reality. I used my knowledge of archivism to help me craft this legislation as well, spending time in the university archives to help understand the history around similar programs in the past. I also used my connection to outside resources to help me build a great and hopefully lasting program, reaching out to UW-Eau Claire’s Student Government for insights into their Legal Services program. At the time of making this the Legislation has been passed by the Stout Student Association but is going through the State of Wisconsin RFP or Request for Purchasing Authority contracting process, which if it passes the program will be ready to launch in fall 2021.
This motion passed through the University Student Senate of the Stout Student Association on March 10th, 2020 making it the official plan for how to bring legal services to the students of UW-Stout.
The third item of my portfolio is an infographic that I made talking about the World War One battle of Caporetto, which occurred from Oct 24, 1917 – Nov 19, 1917. This shows off my strengths in laying out information in an understandable, and distilled format, providing a map, several images, and a graph all at once, but keeping it clean enough and understandable to someone who is not familiar with the battle before.
