Quick Review: Representation great, didnt meet my expectations at ALL
I loved the concept of this book of showcasing a disorder that often has a lot of misconceptions and myths surrounding it. Aza is wonderfully written with flaws and great qualities of her trying to grasp a hold of her OCD. I think where this book got knocked down two notches is from the way this is portrayed on the back. When I went into this book I was expecting a mystery thriller. I should have expected there to be a love story in the book due to it being a John green and that often is a plot line in a lot of his books. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN.
Lets do it
The book did amazing with showcasing how disorders can impact relationships all around you. Love relationships. Friendships. Family Relationships. The mom wanting to do everything inside her to help and to just make Aza feel better was heart whelming. I don't understand what it is like fully to want to help your daughter be at the best that they can and being lost on how to help them, but I can imagine how heartbreaking and lost she felt. Aside from that I can understand Aza not wanting to talk and just trying to grasp control of her spiraling thoughts.
Seeing the relationship between Aza and Daisy was complicated. Aza I can understand because she is constantly having to deal with her thoughts and take control of them so they don't take over her body and thoughts. Its hard and can be exhausting to have to live with. Daisy though felt as though she didn't matter to Aza. She was frustrated at the fact her friend knew nothing about her and her life. She was just looking for a friend which I can understand where she is coming from. She doesnt know what it is like for Aza to live with her thoughts that spiral 24/7 because Aza never told her. The car crash happening and Daisy and Aza talking it through really showed how compassion for each other for the situations they are in can be understood. Both were just terribel to each other.Â
MY MAIN PROBLEM
This book being advertised as a mystery being solved when it was mainly about OCD and the love interest and Aza overcoming her thoughts. I would have LOVED so much more if the love interest wasnt there. It felt out of place and just thrown together with whatever story plot John Green could get people hooked on. I would have much rather a mystery book where they are trying to solve mysteries while Aza is trying to manage her OCD and everything surrounding it. It just fell flat and made everything else 10 times worse.
Overall, I still enjoyed the book and read it in one day because I think John Green did an amazing job showcasing how a disorder can impact your relationships around you and showing common myths that surround OCD, but everything was just so thrown together!
