Makeup Do's And Don'ts

DO match your foundation shade to the skin on your neck,

Because the skin on your face is generally slightly lighter or darker than the skin on your neck, matching your foundation to the neck avoids the dreaded visible line where your foundation begins and ends.

If your chest is darker than your face/neck, add bronzer along the borders of your face to accent the undertone of your décolletage without darkening your entire face.

DON’T use under-eye concealer that’s two shades lighter than your skin color. A concealer half or one shade lighter than your foundation (or your natural skin color if you don't wear foundation) will brighten the under-eye area without producing a stark, distracting contrast. The idea is never to have white-ish circles around the eyes.

DON’T smile as you apply blush to the apples of cheeks. Doing so raises them, As a result, after you stop smiling and your cheeks return to their original position, the blush color appears lower on the face, closer to the lips.

DO strategically illuminate skin for a youthful glow.

Prep your skin with a softly moisturizing toner, serum, or essence before applying makeup, and then amp up the radiance by adding a delicate luminous radiance to your complexion with your makeup. Adding radiance to important areas like your cheekbones, bridge of nose, and cupid's bow can be as simple as putting a soft, somewhat sparkly blush to your cheeks or applying highlighter to your cheekbones, bridge of nose, and cupid's bow.

DON’T assume your brow filler needs to be a shade darker. Using a brow color that is either the same as or slightly lighter than your natural brow color will give you full-looking, naturally defined brows without the severe, heavy contrast. The exception is pale blonde brows. To avoid brows looking washed out or nonexistent, use a tint that is a shade or two darker.

DO add a dab of a lighter and softly light-reflective shade to the center of your eyelid for a bright-eyed look. Remove any excess shadow with a small, flat makeup brush and lightly press/dab it in the middle of the eyelid. Even if you've previously used a dark hue, this finishing touch can make a huge difference. This is also a good way to cover up your lipstick.

DO prep eyelashes for mascara touch-ups. You wind up fighting your way through dried mascara when you try to put another coat over the one you've been wearing all day. What's the end result? A clumpy, flaky mass. Wet a clean spoolie brush and comb through lashes before applying the next coat of mascara to remedy this problem.

AWESOME Lip Tips

For the perfect nude lipstick, go one shade lighter or darker than your natural lip color. It can look ghostly on some skin tones if it's too similar or beige!

On thin lips, avoid dark-hued lipsticks. Dark colors make lips that are already tiny appear smaller. Brighter, richer colors are a lovely way to draw attention to your lips.

DO use concealer to raise the outer corners of your lips, and then use concealer or highlighter around the bottom lip's border to accentuate a pouty appearance.

MORE PRO TIPS

To check or apply your cosmetics, use a magnifying mirror. This is especially true if your vision isn't the best. What you can't see, like makeup settling into fine creases or eyeshadow fallout on your cheeks, you can't repair. Depending on your vision, any mirror with a magnification of 4X or greater will suffice (Paula uses a 10X magnification that she jokingly calls her scary mirror).

DON'T go along with a fad just because everyone else is. Heavy brows, blush stripes, and smudged messy black eyeshadow are all the rage right now, but before you jump on board, make sure it makes you appear beautiful rather than like a caricature of yourself.

At least once a year, have your makeup professionally applied. It's never a bad idea to obtain someone's opinion on how your makeup should appear. There's always something new to learn or a bad habit to break, at the very least.
