English Advising
Welcome to the unofficial English Advising site for CSU, Chico. If you’re here, I’m assuming you’re either already an English major, or you are interested in learning about our program. Or perhaps you’re just nosy. Or lost. Maybe I should just stop making assumptions and trust that you know why you’re here.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Peter Kittle, and I’m one of the English Department's two Advisors (along with Prof. Matt Brown). I'm the advisor for all of the English Education majors, and around half of the English Studies majors; Prof. Brown advises the remaining English Studies majors and all of the Literature majors. I'm a professor in the English Department, too, and am currently serving as the department chair. My academic work is focused on English Education, and I mostly teach future teachers — future elementary school teachers, and future middle school/high school English teachers. My research interests include multimodal composition, systems thinking and education, literacy studies (especially reading and writing pedagogies -- and the role memes and memetics play in these areas), along with the intersections of design thinking, making and education. I’m also a bit of a pop-culture sci-fi geek. And I play darts competitively. And am a Keith Haring and Wassily Kandinsky fanboy. And yet, people mostly like me anyway.
When you have questions about English advising, ask me. Don’t be shy. My office is in the Arts and Humanities Building (ARTS 273 — inside the English Department office). Stop by. Introduce yourself.
What can I help you with today?
Schedule an appointment with me
The link above will take you to my appointment scheduling page. Be sure to select “English Advising” as the service type. You’ll be able to see my available meeting times by clicking on the calendar; if none of them work with your schedule, please email me with the times you are available to meet. Follow the onscreen directions to confirm an appointment. You'll have the option of selecting either an in-person meeting in my office, or a Zoom meeting.
You can also try dropping by my office during the semester if you're nearby. Please check in with the English Department staff to see if I'm available.
Get an Advising Sheet Checklist/Cheat Sheet
I'll be the first one to admit that the requirements for the English major's options can be baffling, whether you're checking the University Catalog, checking your Degree Progress Report, or trying to put together your Degree Planner in your Student Center. But fear not -- follow the link above, and you'll find advising sheets in the form of course checklists that are much simpler to understand.
Wondering about which courses to take, and when? Or about getting a minor or certificate? Or about credential prerequisites, subject matter competency, or similar topics? Check the link to visit the FAQ and see if your question has already been answered.
