The Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1894 in the home of brother Tim Griffin about 2.5 miles from its present location.
The first house of worship was erected on the present site, which had previously been the home of a “white only” school. The school was removed, the land was purchased and the original members worked long and hard, donating the materials to build a permanent place of worship.
The first pastor was the Reverend R.D. Mason of Alton, Virginia. Reverend Mason was a pioneer in the community in the fields of civic, education and religious endeavors and the church thrived under his administration. Reverend Mason served until his health began to decline in 1940.
Following Reverend Mason, the following pastors have served the Chestnut Grove family. W. L. Heard (1941-1945), W.M. Chambers (1945-1947), W. J. Baird (1949-1963), J.H. Jones (1964-1967), J. E. Mclaughlin (1968 1978), Howard Woods ( 1979 -1982), Harold Wentsley ( 1983 — 2002), Bruce Featherston (2002 — 2006), L.G. Wilson (2007 — 2020). In 2020, the current pastor, Elder W.B. Foust accepted the charge to lead this historic church.
For more than a century and a quarter the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of light in the community of Semora, North Carolina. Countless souls have found spiritual refuge within these gates, many souls have been won to the Lord, and God has been our refuge and our strength.
Through many dangers, toils and snares we have already come; it was grace that brought us safe thus far, and grace will lead us on.
The late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spoke often about the beloved community. Chestnut grove Baptist church enjoys a rich history and has always been a warm and welcoming community. However, for its entire history it has served a primarily homogeneous African American constituency.
