Arnie Sidebottom With Hon. Sec. Peter Bateman
VISiT OF ARNIE SIDEBOTTOM ON 27th Oct 2025
Our speaker for the first meeting of the 2025/6 season was Arnie Sidebottom, cricketer for Yorkshire
and England, and professional footballer at Manchester United FC
Arnie was a fast medium bowler for Yorkshire between 1973 and 1991.He joined the ranks of the
“One Test Wonders” in 1985 when he was selected to play against the Australians at Trent Bridge.
He took1 for 65 before a foot injury caused him to limp out of the match.
He also played at halfback for Manchester United between 1972 and 1975, thus being one of
the last players to play professional cricket and football at the top level in this country.
During his cricketing career he took 596 First Class wickets and 264 List A.
His 30-year association with Yorkshire as a player and coach ended in 2003.
As we all know his son Ryan also went on to play for Yorkshire and England- although for a period
he saw the light and moved to Notts!
Arnie gave an amusing and entertaining talk with many anecdotes about his fellow players
(including Darren Gough, Brian Close, David Baistow and Fred Trueman):
his encounters facing the likes of Michael Holding and Curtley Ambrose,
as well as some of the great Manchester United players he played alongside.
