Many people complain on the strength of the good old Chess Titans level. It is estimated around 1750-1800 ELO at the level 10. I don't believe, that Oberon Games wrote bad engine, but it was intentionally weakened instead, to satisfy the casual chess players. I decided to dig deeply into this. (I don't want to discuss the moral aspects of reverse engineering and executables patching, since I do this in sake of improvement).

Hi chessmaster102--I've played Chess Titans hundreds of times, along with countless rated humans/programs, and would assess it around 1600. It has minimal positional understanding, a small opening database, and very shallow lookahead; this does not place it beyond the level of any average club player. It will find most tactical/material opportunities though, putting it above the strength of a novice. Match it against the five "Vs. Computer" opponents on this site in unrated games to see how it fares. I'd definitely say 1600 is about right though.

But the truth is Chess titans strength lies much on the hardware.on desktop I need to play really carefully to beat it.But playing on a laptop,I manage to win even at level 10.I dont have fide rating.so cant say anything about my strength.

This program is pretty weak (even I can win against LVL10) but it is also probably the most used chess program, being included in one of the world's most used operating systems. Only if it were more helpful and more inviting to the world of chess, that would be incredible.

Playing chess is one of the various things you can do on your free time. If you prefer playing the game on your PC screen, Chess Titans is a nice chess game. It is a classic game that was once introduced by Microsoft before eventually got discontinued.

One of the three built-in games included with certain premium versions of the Windows Vista operating system (the other games being InkBall and Mahjong Titans), Chess Titans is a simple chess game with support for both local multiplayer and AI opponents (with 10 difficulty levels). It also supports the Windows Media Center service for use with TVs.

Whether players are chess masters or have never played, people from all ages attend and play for free. Part of the initiative is for players to learn the rules of the game or teach others who are still learning, face various opponents and meet new friends.

The game set consists of 16 pieces, ranging from a pawn; which can only move forward one space at a time until it is attacking, all the way to the queen; which can move forward, backward, and diagonally unlimited spaces, as well as attack from any direction. The game of chess only requires two players and even young children can learn to play. At first it is a little tricky to understand all of the rules, but once mastered, chess is great fun that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Prior to its release, Microsoft had previously bundled a somewhat more primitive-looking, though by no means any less playable, computerised rendition of the "game of champions" by the name of Microsoft Chess; so Chess Titans is essentially an overhauled version of this game, awash with new photo-realistic visuals of the board and playing pieces with 3-dimensional graphics. Gameplay-wise, it's classic, unembellished chess: every standard game starts two opposing players out on an 8x8 chequered grid of black and white squares, with two lines of pieces taking up the 16 spaces at the farthest ends.

All in all, Chess Titans for Windows PCs isn't going to be anything that you'd prioritise over the hottest new AAA gaming title. It's computerised chess, and even chess has its limits. But that's no huge problem at all; after all, this was designed as a free time-waster that you can just access via your Windows 'Games' menu and blow anything from between a few minutes to a whole afternoon on. It replicates the game of chess and all its rules faultlessly with a perfectly fine presentation and no areas in need of any dire improvement. It can suit any player of any skill, as well as serve as a useful tutorial to the chess newcomer. It doesn't really offer anything new or different to what you'd get just from playing a standard board game if that's what works for you, otherwise it's a very good, customisable, challenging and replayable PC chess rendition that ought to do the job for anybody who likes to play this marvellous strategical board game.
