The Airbus BelugaXL carries airplanes.
Every Airbus jet begins its life scattered across Europe. Wings may be manufactured in the United Kingdom, fuselage sections produced in Germany and France, and other structures assembled in Spain. Somehow, all of those enormous pieces must arrive at Airbus final assembly lines on schedule.
The answer is one of the most recognizable aircraft ever built: the Airbus A330-743L BelugaXL.
Based on the A330-200 platform, the BelugaXL was launched in 2014 because Airbus needed substantially more transportation capacity than its older A300-600ST Belugas could provide. The first BelugaXL flew from Toulouse on July 19, 2018, entered operational service in 2020, and Airbus ultimately built six. The final aircraft joined Airbus Transport International in 2024. Each can carry 51 tonnes, has roughly 2,200 nautical miles of range, and provides about 30% more transport capacity than the BelugaST.
Its bizarre shape exists for a reason. The normal A330 cockpit was lowered so the enormous cargo door could open above it, while Airbus created a gigantic enlarged upper fuselage, modified tail and specialized loading system. The result can swallow loads such as two roughly 30-meter A350 wings at once.
And unlike many unusual cargo aircraft, the BelugaXL isn't primarily an occasional special-mission machine.
It goes to work.
The six aircraft are operated by Airbus Transport International (ATI), Airbus's internal airline, moving aircraft sections among 11 European destinations. Airbus says a typical loading operation can achieve about a 70-minute turnaround, allowing the Belugas to function almost like an airborne assembly line.
In this tour, you're joining ATI.
You'll fly between the same major Airbus manufacturing centers served by real Beluga operations, carrying wings, fuselage sections and other components that eventually become complete Airbus aircraft.

Mission: Begin at the home of Airbus in Toulouse and fly to Bremen, Germany, retracing an important route from the BelugaXL's development program.
The story begins long before the BelugaXL.
Airbus has always had an unusual problem.
It builds airplanes internationally.
Instead of constructing everything beside one factory, Airbus developed a European manufacturing network. Major aircraft structures are produced at specialized facilities hundreds of miles apart before being brought together for final assembly.
Originally, Airbus used modified Super Guppies to transport these enormous components.
Then came the A300-600ST Beluga, entering service in 1995. Its enormous upper fuselage made it one of the strangest aircraft in the sky—and for decades it became the backbone of Airbus's internal logistics network.
But Airbus kept growing.
Then came the A350.
Its enormous components presented a problem.
The old Belugas simply couldn't provide the capacity Airbus wanted for future production rates.
So in 2014, Airbus authorized something bigger.
The BelugaXL program was born.
Instead of designing an entirely new aircraft, engineers started with the proven A330 platform and transformed it into something almost unrecognizable.
Your destination, Bremen, became part of that development story. In November 2018, the first BelugaXL visited Bremen for loading and unloading validation. It was another step toward proving that this enormous machine could actually function inside Airbus's production network.
Today, you're following it.
Mission: Load Airbus components in Bremen and transport them to Toulouse, recreating an early operational proving mission of the BelugaXL.
The cargo door closes.
The enormous hold that looked cavernous only minutes ago is now occupied by aircraft structures.
This is exactly what the BelugaXL was built to do.
During its testing program, the first BelugaXL conducted compatibility trials throughout Airbus's European manufacturing network. In February 2019, it carried A350 wings from Bremen to Toulouse during the aircraft's verification campaign.
Think about that as you begin today's takeoff roll.
You're flying an airplane...
carrying pieces of another airplane...
to a factory where those pieces will eventually become another airplane.
This is aviation supporting aviation.
After landing at Toulouse, specialized loading equipment meets the aircraft. The Beluga's enormous cargo door rises while the lowered cockpit remains underneath.
The cargo emerges.
Soon those components will disappear into the Airbus production system.
Your Beluga doesn't stay long.
There are more parts waiting elsewhere.
Mission: Position to Airbus Broughton in the United Kingdom to collect aircraft wings.
If there is one destination inseparable from the Beluga story, it is Broughton.
Airbus manufactures wings at its facility beside Hawarden Airport in North Wales. The site produces wings for major Airbus commercial-aircraft programs, and moving structures of that size presents an obvious problem.
You can't exactly put an A350 wing in the back of a truck and drive it through the Channel Tunnel.
That's where you come in.
As Hawarden appears ahead, you'll see an airport dramatically smaller than the enormous industrial airports one might expect the Beluga to use.
Yet this is part of the aircraft's everyday working environment.
Land.
Taxi to the specialized facility.
Open the enormous cargo door.
Load the wings.
And get moving.
Airbus describes Broughton as one of the major locations served by its Beluga fleet.

The BelugaXL climbs away from Wales carrying something few aircraft in the world could accommodate.

Below you, Britain disappears behind clouds as you cross toward continental Europe.
This route demonstrates why the Beluga exists.
Without the Beluga fleet, Airbus would have to move oversized structures using slower combinations of road and sea transportation. Airbus does use road, rail and ships for portions of its logistics system, but air transportation remains central to moving major components efficiently.
Hamburg is one of the great centers of Airbus manufacturing and final assembly.
So when you descend toward EDDH, you're not simply delivering cargo.
You're feeding a factory.
Production schedules may depend upon what is sitting behind your cockpit.
That is why ATI operates the Beluga more like an industrial shuttle than a conventional cargo airline.
Unload.
Reload.
Depart.
The factory never stops.
Neither does the whale.

If Toulouse represents one heart of Airbus, Hamburg represents another.
The European nature of Airbus is visible every time a Beluga moves between them.
The aircraft itself almost symbolizes the company: components and engineering from across Europe brought together to create something no single factory could efficiently produce alone.
Today, fuselage structures occupy the enormous cargo deck behind you.
Unlike a normal freighter, the BelugaXL isn't primarily designed around pallets and containers.
Its reason for existence is volume.
The airplane is approximately 63 meters long, yet its most striking feature is the enormous upper fuselage required to accommodate outsized aircraft structures.
From the cockpit, however, it still has A330 DNA.
Two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines provide the power.
Modern Airbus systems manage the flight.
And somewhere behind you sits part of a future airliner.
Mission: Fly to western France to support Airbus's Saint-Nazaire manufacturing operation.
Passengers rarely think about where their airplane came from.
They see a completed A320 or A350 waiting at the gate.
But months earlier, that aircraft existed as pieces scattered across Europe.
Saint-Nazaire is another important part of Airbus's industrial network and the broader western-France aerospace manufacturing cluster.
Structures produced here must eventually meet wings from Britain, components from Spain, fuselage sections from Germany and thousands of systems supplied from around the world.
The Beluga is what makes those distances manageable.
Instead of thinking of Airbus as several factories, imagine one enormous factory spread across Europe.
The highways between its buildings aren't roads.
They're airways.
And the BelugaXL is the truck.

The clock begins the moment you arrive.
Cargo teams move into position.
Specialized loading equipment aligns with the aircraft.
The massive forward cargo door opens.
Components begin moving.
Airbus says the BelugaXL network averages a turnaround of only around 70 minutes using specialized loading facilities.
That's remarkable when you consider the cargo.
These aren't suitcases.
They're airplane sections.
Everything about the Beluga operation has been designed around keeping Airbus production moving.
When an assembly line needs components, the Beluga cannot simply arrive whenever convenient.
Aircraft manufacturing is choreography.
One late shipment can affect another production stage.
That can affect another.
And another.
You're beginning to understand the Beluga's real job.
It doesn't simply transport airplane parts.
It transports time.

Few aircraft demonstrate European industrial cooperation quite like the Beluga.
Airbus manufacturing isn't contained within one country. Its production system was deliberately built around specialized European facilities.
That means an individual Airbus aircraft can effectively travel thousands of miles before it has ever flown under its own power.
A structure begins in one country.
The Beluga collects it.
Another facility adds something else.
Eventually everything converges at final assembly.
To someone watching from the ground, the enormous smiling aircraft passing overhead may look almost comical.
To Airbus, it is infrastructure.

Loading a BelugaXL can create one of aviation's strangest sights.
An aircraft component disappears inside another aircraft.
Sometimes that component is so enormous that seeing it on the ground makes you wonder how anything could possibly transport it by air.
That was exactly the challenge Airbus engineers faced.
The BelugaXL provides a maximum payload of approximately 51 tonnes and about 2,200 nautical miles of range. More importantly, its enlarged hold provides around 30% greater transport capacity than the BelugaST.
That additional volume matters enormously as Airbus increases production.
You turn toward Toulouse.
Behind you is another piece of the production puzzle.
Ahead waits the assembly line.
Mission: Return to Broughton for one of the Beluga fleet's signature jobs: collecting another set of wings.
The original Beluga was already enormous.
Why build something larger?
One answer is sitting inside the cargo hold you're about to collect.
The A350.
Airbus designed the BelugaXL so that its cargo bay could accommodate major structures including two A350 wings.
That dramatically increases efficiency.
Instead of making additional flights, Airbus can move more production hardware with each rotation.
And this explains why the BelugaXL isn't merely an oversized novelty.
It's an economics machine.
More components per flight.
Faster loading.
Greater production capacity.
Six aircraft moving continuously through Europe.
One flight may not seem particularly important.
Multiply that flight across years of aircraft production and the scale becomes enormous.
Mission: Carry a high-volume wing shipment from Broughton to Toulouse as Airbus production reaches its final stages.
The BelugaXL program originally envisioned five aircraft.
Airbus eventually decided it needed six.
The reason was simple: resilience and growth.
If production increased—or one aircraft became unavailable—the additional Beluga would provide vital capacity.
The first aircraft had made its maiden flight in July 2018.
After more than 800 hours of flight testing, that same first airframe eventually underwent refurbishment and joined operational service. In June 2024, it became the sixth and final member of the active BelugaXL fleet.
Six enormous white whales.
Moving wings.
Fuselages.
Aircraft structures.
Factory to factory.
Day after day.
And today you're one of them.
As Toulouse appears ahead, look at the wing you're carrying and remember something:
The next time you see an Airbus climbing away from an airport somewhere in the world...
part of it may once have flown inside a Beluga.

The final flight isn't glamorous.
There are no passengers applauding.
No vacation begins when you land.
No baggage carts rush toward the aircraft.
There may not even be many people waiting outside.
And that's exactly what makes the BelugaXL extraordinary.
It was never designed to be glamorous.
It was designed to solve a problem.
Airbus needed to connect factories spread across Europe as though they were buildings sitting beside one another.
So Airbus built an airplane capable of carrying airplanes.
The BelugaXL entered service in 2020 after receiving certification in 2019. Today, the six-aircraft fleet operated by Airbus Transport International connects 11 European destinations, carrying the enormous structures required to keep Airbus aircraft production moving.
Its predecessor, the BelugaST, served Airbus for roughly three decades. Airbus announced the ST fleet's retirement, with the XL fleet set to become the sole Beluga transporter for Airbus components from mid-2027.
As Hamburg appears ahead, the enormous aircraft begins descending.
Flaps extend.
Gear down.
The whale returns to earth.
Soon the cargo door will open.
Another aircraft section will disappear into another factory.
Another Airbus will move closer to its first flight.
Then somebody will close the door.
Fuel the Beluga.
And send it back into the sky.
Because somewhere else in Europe...
