Basically, FCIV calculates MD5 or SHA-1 hash values for files and outputs them either to the screen or to an XML file. It can also compare files to those checksums saved in XML and tell you if anything differs or is missing. A demo is worth a lot of words, so let's see it in action!

-wp means we're saving only the file names in the XML file, not their full path

-sha1 specifies to calculate a SHA-1 hash on each file. The default is MD5.

-xml means output the checksums to an XML file, in this case the G:\hashdb.xml that follows it.

-v means we're now in verification mode, so it will verify checksums in the current directory against those in the XML file

-sha1 again specifies we're using the SHA-1 hash

-xml is the file we're comparing our calculated checksums against

Others may raise the point that both the MD5 and SHA-1 checksums both suffer from collision vulnerabilities and there are better alternatives out there that this application doesn't support. They're totally correct, but it's also important to remember that we're using these checksums to detect changes, not for cryptography or protecting secrets. Any form of verification is better than none, and for my purposes FCIV has proven to be very helpful.

Rebuilds DB file, by removing all unused entries (when an entry exists, but the file does not exist) from the XML file and add all new files that has no records in the XML file using SHA1 algorithm. Existing files are not checked for integrity consistence.

(A) Yes, you are right. Theoretically, the filesystem is responsible for the integrity of the files. There are really great filesystems out there that can totally handle all these problems.

CRC checksums cannot be used to verify the authenticity of files, as CRC32 is not a collision resistant hash function --even if the hash sum file is not tampered with, it is computationally trivial for an attacker to replace a file with the same CRC digest as the original file, meaning that a malicious change in the file is not detected by a CRC comparison.[citation needed]

Automation Workshop includes the Compute File Checksum Action that calculates file hashes in the most popular formats, such as SHA-256, MD5, CRC32, and more. Hashes or checksums are used to verify file integrity and to ensure that file data has not been modified.

I was reading about how one of the things built into FLAC files is the audio's checksum, but it took a bit of research before I was able to figure out how to do this and even then I didn't find anything I really liked.

Now I love this program and it's my go program to for all things flac besides playback so if I could run a tool that would verify that the audio streams checksum is still correct that would be absolutely fantastic

In general: mp3tag does not deal with the audio part even if the checksum might be a part of a tag (although I think it is part of the header).

So most likely, you have to resort to external programs.

Since you are already using LR, I would accept that as a definitive integrity raw file check. What would you do if you found another app that said the file is not corrupt? You still need to get it to work in LR. Replace the questionable files in the folder that LR looks at with a backup of the identical file and see it that helps.

To clarify, checksums cannot detect file corruption. Checksums are used to detect file changes which may indicate file corruption but you need to have the file is "ok" checksum to compare against. Checksums are difficult to use in an active image archive due to constant changes in file metadata.

OK thanks. Yeah I use a program called GoodSync for syncing my backups and primary "photos" drive, but dos this actually check the file itself? Reason I'm asking is because supposedly some RAW files, like Nikon's NEF and Canon's CR2 don't have imbedded checksums from what I read. I'm thinking this app is more like the GoodSync app which I have, which does do integrity validation, but only to the point that is the file that was copied the exact same as the source file.... I don't think it looks at the actual checksums for RAW files as there doesn't appear to be one in the file...

Cause of the Shift button pressed a menu will popup, there you can configure Checksum in what it does.

For example the algorithm you want to use, there are 3 of them, Blake2 is the best but also the slowest.

MD5 is the fastest but also the.........?

Also the choice of individual checksums, or one-file root checksum, or the default(by not checking the individual checksum and one-file root checksum)

Default is so that every folder has a checksum-file that contains hashes for any file in that folder.

And the possibility to hide all hash-files if they irritate you, and several more options but less important ones.

However you can make things permanent, for instance the wildcards, you can make a serie of wildcards with just image extensions in it if you are most of the time working with image files, or anything else.

By customising checksum.ini which looks like a textfile.

It has explanations within the checksum.ini file from the inventor how to set it up, so not much can go wrong, and makes life easier and fast.

This checksum.ini file lives on my pc in the folder:

C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\corz\checksum

Checksums numbers are pretty unique, if a hash is different then it is not an opinion but a calculation that shows something has changed.

It gives you the answer where the problem lies, is the problem coming from the file or the program that tries to open it.

Normally programs don't tell you what the problem is, but checksums do, and most other checksum programs do the same.

If the checksum is the same as it was when it was made you can be sure it is the program or something else but not the file.

This sounds all complicated but it's easy, fast and secure, it is flexible, for example the one-file-root checksum option is interesting, you can have a folder with 1000's of files but just one checksum in the first folder, cause all checksums are combined in this one file.

Or you can choose individual checksums, so that all files have their own checksum file, so if there are 600 files then you also have 600 checksum files

When verifying you do about the same as above, press the Shift button, keep it pressed, then choose/click the folder, with the right mouse button, A menu pops-up, click on Verify Checksums, the checksum configuration window pops up, set it to your likings.

The most interesting ones are "recurse" should be activated by default.

"delete missing hashes" for files that are deleted or are moved to another Folder/Disk "update changed hashes" for files that are changed.

This means that if you spend some time with your images and changed them a bit then you can update the checksums to the newest version.
