You need both numbers. The PIN is on the back of the card, usually under a scratch-off strip. On an eGift Card it's printed in the email.

Can I check a Sephora gift card balance without the PIN? Not online or by phone — both need the PIN. The one way around it is to take the card into a Sephora store, where a Beauty Advisor can look up the balance at the register without you reading out the PIN.

How to check your balance safely

Gift card balance pages are a common target for scams. A few rules keep you safe:

• Type the address yourself. Go to sephora.com directly rather than clicking a search result you're not sure about.

• The real page only asks for the card number and PIN — never your name, email, password, or payment details. If a "balance checker" asks for more, leave.

• Sephora will never phone or email you asking for your gift card number. Anyone who does is not Sephora.

• A balance that has vanished without you spending it may mean the card was drained on the shop rack before you bought it. Report it to Sephora.
