We quickly get the answer to this question if we open one of the ranking URLs in our browser. Simply click on the square with the arrow in front of any URL on this list. The pages within the /s/ directory are actually the internal search results for those keywords on download.cnet.com.

Google has been preaching, for years, that they do not want to have search-results within their index. Cnet.com chose to disregard this advice and assembled the content for their keyword category pages on download.cnet.com by using their internal search.

The majority of the content in the download.cnet.com/windows/ directory was redirected to download.cnet.com/s/ in March 2016 (e.g. download.cnet.com/windows/web-browsers/). Now, the /windows/ directory made a comeback and is ranking again on Google, while still redirecting to the /s/ directory, nontheless.

I'm installing some older packages with npm to support an existing project, and at one point while trying to install node-sass, it looks for the .NET Framework 2.0 SDK. I've tried downloading the installer from the Internet Archive and download.cnet.com but when I run them, the mouse cursor flickers but nothing else happens. No installation window comes up. The installers from the two sites are binary identical. I've tried this on both my own machine and a colleague's machine with the same lack of results.

Without reading all the source code to firefox (I haven't time) - is anyone familiar enough with Firefox V3's ability to invoke a scan on any downloaded EXE file to know how it works?I would think any anti-virus program with active protection would hook into windows and be run automatically. Does firefox detect these hooks and bring them up by creating a windows folder and moving the file after it is downloaded from a temporary filename, to a new file name with .exe in the name, thus triggering the automatic protection? Or do they do something else?

OESIS from opswat appears to provide this as a commercial SDK/application, which is a surprise when it probably should be a Windows API, given that what we're doing here is in the public good of all humans who have to use windows.] - actually it is - it is built into the windows shell.
