JoStar is a Crested Serpent Eagle baby in Pingtung, Taiwan. The nest cam, a collaboration between Xinchang Ecological Research Ltd. and NPUST Bird Ecology Lab, officially went live on May 13, 2026, but it ended because JoStar passed away suddenly on June 1, 2026.
Dear JoStar:
On the morning of June 1, 2026, I watched through a screen as you struggled to breathe and looked very unwell. No one can truly understand how much pain and discomfort you were going through at that moment.
You didn't deserve such an ending. I know you wouldn't have wanted it, and neither would your parents. That is why I wanted to paint you with a gentle smile and eyes shining like stars. I hope you are living happily in another world.
While looking through close-up screenshots as reference, I noticed the soft white feathers on your body. They looked like tiny stars quietly dancing around you.
Special thanks to the research team for sharing the nest cam livestream. Through their work, people have been able to observe the lives of wild animals more closely, understand the challenges they face, and reflect on the relationship between humans and the natural world.

In the lower-left corner of the image is JoStar's mother.
When JoStar was lying on the ground, breathing heavily and clearly feeling unwell, she returned to the nest carrying a large amount of leaves and branches and covered him with them. The exact reason for this behavior is still unknown. One explanation that I find convincing is that animals can sense when death is approaching, and the mother may have been trying to hide JoStar from potential predators. Others believe she was simply trying to make him more comfortable by providing shade or shelter.
She stayed by his side until the very end. In this artwork, I chose to show some leaves covering JoStar to express the care and protection his mother gave him. She was the one who spent the most time with him—shielding him from the sun and rain, sharing meals, and sleeping beside him.
There is also a moth resting on the mother's head. It often appeared at night and was frequently seen perched there. I was told that it is a Eudocima homaena, a species that may obtain protein by feeding on the tears of birds.

In the upper-right corner is JoStar's father, carrying a lizard in his talons. His main role was hunting, patrolling the area around the nest, and protecting his family, so he did not spend much time in the nest.
On the day JoStar passed away, researchers came to remove his body. It was only afterward that his father returned with a lizard, never having the chance to see him one last time.
After returning, the father kept calling out. He flew off several times to patrol the area, calling repeatedly before coming back to the nest. The lizard remained tightly held in his talons, seemingly intended for JoStar. He looked around constantly, appearing confused as he searched for his chick. It was the longest time I had ever seen him stay at the nest.
I still remember that moment clearly. While I was eating lunch in my office, I watched him calling again and again, still holding the lizard and searching everywhere for JoStar. I was so overwhelmed with sadness that I couldn't finish my meal.

On June 2, 2026, according to a preliminary necropsy conducted by the Bird Ecology Laboratory of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, poisoning has been identified as a possible cause of JoStar's death. The exact cause is still under investigation, and further laboratory results have yet to be announced.
Even if the final results show that JoStar did not die from consuming a contaminated prey, the impact of human-used chemicals on wildlife remains an important issue that deserves attention.
