Chautauqua Tour 2019

The "Be Mary" Tour

General Tour Information

This June, Chautauqua will be embarking on a month-long tour of Southcentral Alaska, journeying North by bus under the wide open skies of the Alcan to tour Southcentral Alaska, including Talkeetna, Anchorage, Seward, and Homer. The "Be Mary" tour will celebrate the life and legacy of Mary Langham, an artist, circus founder and educator, mother, teacher, doctor, writer, Chautauqua Tour Organizer , and just an all-around joyfully dynamic person. We will be bringing this joy to prisons for youth, women, and men, homeless and at-risk populations, indigenous communities, adults with disabilities, and Mary's friends, family and community. We will collaborate with the Green Light Circus in Talkeetna, founded by Mary, and enjoy seeing the fruition of what she started. We will also collaborate in Homer with the Pier One Theatre, where Mary's cast members still perform.

Please see the "Tour Itinerary" below for more details on our day-to-day plans in Southcentral Alaska.

Bus Dates

For those riding the bus, the tour will run from June 7 to July 9.

Departing Bellingham on June 7th, the bus will return on July 9th, then continue down to OCF by July 11th.

Flying Dates

Chautauquans will need to fly into Anchorage by June 11 and should depart July 6 or later.

Alternatively, for a "short" tour, it would be possible to arrive between June 20 and 24 in Anchorage and fly out July 5/6 - this would mean missing the Talkeetna stop.

What to expect on our bus ride:

The bus will be retro-fitted for enhanced comfort. The Bluebird's has just been thoroughly inspected and repaired. The plan is to take 5 days to drive the bus up (north to Alaska) and, after tour, 5 days to drive it down (south to the States) along one of the world's most astonishing routes, known as the Alaskan Canadian Highway or simply as the Alcan. We'll take in the sights and scenery along the way, sampling the culture of dive bars in small towns, breaking for wild life - caribou, bears, moose (as well as pit stops) and enjoying a spring tucked among the alpine meadows. For those who need it, the bus will stop through Bellingham, Seattle, and Portland on the journey down to OCF after the tour. It's going to be a gas (or in this case a diesel) with loads of music, good food, amazing scenery, and loads of laughs!!!
