Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi (Late)

(1960 - 2020)


Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi was born in Lucknow in the year 1960. He had his schooling and higher education also in Lucknow. He obtained the degrees of B.Sc. (Physics, Mathematics & Statistics), M.Sc. (Statistics) and Ph.D. (Statistics) from the University of Lucknow in the years 1979, 1982 and 1989 respectively.

           

Prof. Chaturvedi joined the University of Jammu in Oct. 1988, where he served as a Lecturer in the Department of Statistics for almost five years. He then moved to Meerut and joined the Department of Statistics in CCS University as a Lecturer in June 1993, where he worked till Jan. 2000. After that, He served as an Associate Professor of Statistics in the University of Allahabad from Jan. 2000 to Jan. 2002. He has been working as an Associate Professor from Jan. 2002 to Dec. 2008 and as a Professor since Dec. 2008 until his demise (Feb. 23, 2020) in the Department of Statistics, University of Delhi.

            

Prof. Chaturvedi made prolific research contributions in several areas of statistics including sequential analysis, statistical inference, reliability & life testing, ranking & selection and distribution theory. He is especially recognized for the outstanding contributions in sequential and multi-stage sampling designs, inferential reliability and families of distributions. There are more than 140 refereed research articles to his credit in several national and international journals and 3 chapters in the edited books. He collaborated with the researchers from various reputed institutions. His work has been cited tremendously in several books and articles all over the world. He guided 23 students for their Ph.D. as a principal supervisor and/or co-supervisor. Besides this, 25 M.Phil. students have obtained their degrees under his supervision. At the time of his demise, 9 Ph.D. students were enrolled in the Ph.D. under his supervision. He also completed one research project titled “Sequential Techniques to Deal with Some Problems in Reliability/Survival Analysis” sponsored by the University Grants Commission of India.        

           

Prof. Chaturvedi cracked the prestigious research fellowship of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1983. He has been awarded the best research paper award three times by the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics in 1987, 1989 and 1995 respectively. He also got the opportunity to present his work in the young scientist presentation program of the Indian Science Congress in 1990. He has been offered the visiting scientist position several times by the Indian Statistical Institute Calcutta. He has been regularly invited for talks, lectures and session chairing in several reputed conferences and universities in India and abroad. He has been in the selection committees for recruiting faculties of various universities and also in the research advisory committees of various institutions.    

           

Prof. Chaturvedi has served as an associate editor of the Journal of Probability and Statistical Science and International Journal of Agricultural and Statistical Sciences. He has been the reviewer for numerous journals of international repute, such as, Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Biometrics, Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, Communications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation,   Journal of Applied Statistics, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Reliability Engineering and System Safety,  Sequential Analysis, Statistical Methodology, Statistics and Probability Letters, Statistical Papers, Statistica Neerlandica and many more.
