It had happened again. There I stood in the bitter cold, and she failed to show up. As I stood there, I decided to give her ten more minutes before calling for a ride home.
Who am I? My name is Joe. I'm your basic high school geek. I was supposed to be meeting my girlfriend, Katie, for a movie, but, just like the other time we planned a date, she didn't show up.
The ten minutes I waited were agonizingly cold, but they passed regardless, so I pulled out my cell and called my dad.
Later that night, as I thumbed through my dragon books, I thought of how we met, how we accidentally had our first kiss, and of the little gifts I had given her...
------
Joe..." Katie sat beside me as I lay on a grassy hill.
"What is it Katie-chan?" I sat up and put my arm across her back, hugging her.
"When do you think we can get married?" She put her head on my shoulder.
"Well first we'll have to graduate, then get enough money," I smiled and hugged her closer, "so I'd say about four years."
"That's so long..." her voice seemed to echo as she whispered. "How do you know we'll still love each other by then?"
Suddenly, Katie felt cold, and I looked over to her. Her image had changed from cute beauty to something all shadowy. Her yellow eyes looked at me as she hissed, "How do you know you'll still be able to love?"
I recoiled in fear and stood up as the scenery dissolved into black. Several more yellow eyes emerged from the black, staring at me. I could still see the outline of Shadow-Katie, thanks to some purple glow, and I heard hisses in the darkness behind me.
"A heart in turmoil..." "Does it sseek light or sshadow?" "There iss no pain in sshadowss..."
Shadow-Katie leaned forward and whispered in my ear, "You've always been a nobody." Suddenly, she transformed into a giant, wild-haired monster and picked me up. Suddenly, an equally large, white creature appeared and grabbed me as well.
They engaged in a tug-of-war over me, until I heard a noise and saw my body wrenched in half and carried away by both sides.
------
I shot up in bed. It was all a dream. It was morning on the first day of Winter Vacation. I glanced down and saw the screen on my phone alerting me to a text message from Katie.
"Y do u love me?" I stopped breathing for a moment before I replied.
"I just do. isn't that enough?"
"No, I need more than that" What brought this on?
"Y? i love you!"
"But i dont luv u" I nearly dropped my phone in shock, tears welling up in my eyes.
As I attempted to argue the validity of my love, the tears began streaming silently down my face. After a while, she stopped replying. There was only one thing I could do to ease the pain, and that lay in a book.
I dried my face and changed into some cleaner clothes. I got on my bike and rode into town, heading for the library.
I walked into the library, heading into the SciFi section, when a large, black tome caught my eye. It was entitled, The Darkness by someone called Niemand Herzlos.
I suddenly heard one of the whispers from my dream: "There iss no pain in sshadowss..." I shuddered, but felt compelled to get the book. It felt like any other book. But what was I expecting, slime? Anyways, it seemed to fit my needs and would absorb me all afternoon, maybe even longer.
The first page of the book had an odd drawing of a crossed out heart. After that came text, along with some odd diagrams, detailing the benefits of dwelling in darkness. Example: "If you close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams, you'll live as you've never lived before."
I stayed up well past midnight, drawing the spell circles in the snow. I finished the whole array and stood in the center, holding the book, and read aloud a section that seemed made just for me.
"Grant me the peace of darkness and take away my pain!" The lines I had drawn began to burn with a sickly, green fire that began to climb up my body.
I fell to my knees as I lost strength to the cold flames, when a little, black bug/rabbit/thing rose from the ground, facing the other way. As it turned around, I shakily grabbed my dragon pendant. It had the yellow eyes from my dream.
'No! NO!' I was trying to shout, but my strength was almost all gone. I started to fight the green flames, and as I did so, more of the yellow-eyed monsters rose from the ground, looking more-or-less directly at me. As I finally gathered enough strength to stand, they all charged at me in one black wave.
I shook wildly in an attempt to shake off the monsters, but only succeeded in letting them steal my coat and shirt. Then one of them jumped into my chest, right through my dragon pendant. I pulled it out, and with it came a pink, glowing thing, slowly turning black. As I started to fade, I saw some white, rubbery thing flying at me. There was a sharp pain in my forehead and I was gone.
