Foot Pronation

What is Overpronation and Why It Matters

overpronation.pdf

For people who are over-pronating you want sneakers designed to shift weight more towards the outside of the foot as you contact the ground.

Shoe companies accomplish this by making the inside of the shoe thicker and/or stiffer than the outside. Depending on how much support is needed you will either want a "Stability" style sneaker (mild-moderate support) or "Motion Control" style sneaker (maximum support).

Some examples of shoes which fall into these categories are; Asics Gel Keyano, Brooks Beast (max support), Brooks Adrenaline GTS, and Mizuno Wave Inspire. These examples all have slightly different weights and materials so you can decide what is the most comfortable for your body.

To learn more about the different sneaker features I suggest reading through this article https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/running-shoes.html. This article is specifically referencing running, but the same concepts apply.

The orthotic goals for people who are over-pronating is to elevate the medial arch inside the shoe. To accomplish this, you can try an over-the-counter orthosis or see a specialist for custom orthoses. Most of our patients with DS use either custom foot orthoses, UCBL orthoses or SMOs to control their over-pronation depending on their size and the level of deformity present.
