2022 brought a lot of excitement for one Filipino community. They were blessed with two new additions named Elijah and Jeian. To help the families with the cost of the newborns, we have used some of the donated funds to help buy diapers, baby formula, playmats, breast pumps, contactless thermometers, electric baby nail trimmers, oximeters, and some toys. These two infants would not have any of this if it was not for the help of the people who generously donated. These families struggle with basic necessities and it was a privilege to help them as their families grew this year.

Along with baby supplies we were able to fund the purchase of rice, noodles and other non-perishables. These individuals do not have traditional kitchens like you and I have in North America and are unable to keep perishable items on hand for any length of time. Combine this with extreme poverty and high cost of food, they struggle to make ends meet and provide for their children.
Another major item provided to these communities was basic medicine like Paracetamol, Vitamin D Drops and antibiotics. The generous contributions we received also went to providing medicine and medical support for an elderly with tuberculosis. Sadly, she passed away from the disease due to the high cost of healthcare and lack of support in accessing it; but thanks to our donors, she had an excellent end of life and was extremely grateful for the support and help we were able to provide her. Most importantly, we were able to ensure she got her favourite meals, including rambutan and oranges, at the end of life and she passed away peacefully.

With the funds raised during our summer campaign, we were also able to provide many families in three different villages with different meals outside their regular twice daily meal of rice and dried fish. Available funds provided spaghetti with hotdog, bread, omelettes, soups (and dessert for the children). An estimated 75+ people were able to enjoy these meals. A meal like this, feeding 75+ individuals, only costs roughly $40 CAD and even provides left overs for some families to take home. Therefore, the plan is to make this “special” meal a biweekly event for the children so they can experience different meals like you and me.

This past fall we sent new backpacks, notepads and colouring supplies to the children in the villages. They were thrilled to each get their own bag to bring with them to school.

More recently, their parents said they really wanted to play volleyball, so we reached out to the Ontario Volleyball Association and they sent us volleyball balls, jerseys, sunglasses and other items like key chains, notepads and pens. As mentioned previously, we want to ensure the items we send for the kids have a dual purpose, and in this case, the donation from Ontario Volleyball will not only be fun but also provide for excellent physical activity!! We look forward to contributing more school items as required for these children to learn and grow.
The communities were provided with chickens for eggs and to hatch and grow for food consumption. The donations received have also gone to the purchase of goats for milk and recently one of our goats welcomed two “kids” of her own. We hope to be able to provide more livestock in the future with the intent for these villages to become even more self-sustaining!
