First of all, let it be known I got a C in a college physics class! (In fact, in more than one.) But importantly, this is a book, not a class. What I want readers to do is sit back and take what they can and feel a little or a lot of wonder at the universe and both how much and how little we know about it. Importantly, science is about what we don’t know! A major part of being a scientist is being comfortable with not knowing what’s going on because our job is to live at the edge of what human’s understand and then push that line forward. We are confused — all the time. It is our job.

Nelson credits his coaches and his team for the 21-16 victory against Opelika on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 at Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. Fans and students exploded in excitement as the team won the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A title. It was the first AHSAA football championship win for Ramsay High in Birmingham, Ala. The last time a Birmingham school won a state football championship was in 1972 and 1973 when the now-closed Banks High School won back-to-back championship games.

The last time Ramsay had a football team was in 1976, the same year that Nelson was born. That fact is not lost on Nelson, a married minister with two children. Some people look at it as if he was born to lead the school to victory.

In 1996, the Chanda Smith Consent Decree and subsequent legal decisions ushered in sweeping special education reforms in Los Angeles schools. The school district has improved its policies to identify students with special needs more quickly, and get them appropriate services.

But, as explored in a two-part series by Education Week Video that began airing Tuesday night on the PBS NewsHour, the experience of some students is still mixed. While some families strive for more meaningful inclusion for their children, others say that specialized schools are the best fit.

What are you (and your family, if you so choose) passionate about?

We enjoy giving back to the community. It started with my grandmother. She would give you the shoes off her feet and the shirt off her back.

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! Until the 5th grade, I rarely spend a full school year in a location before we moved again. I got to experience many different schools, many different teachers, and the art of making new friends. I loved to learn and had many great teachers that always made me feel welcome. I wanted to share my love of learning with others and help students that struggle. As I entered high school, I discovered that I LOVED math and although I was not the best mathematician, I enjoyed the puzzle and discovery of Algebra. This was when I decided to become a MATH teacher!

Ever since she was a child, Chanda Holschbach had a passion for learning about, helping and loving animals. Her mother's nursing background laid a foundation of "bedside manner" and her father's entrepreneurial business background provided a real understanding of economics.

Becky grew up on a farm in the town of Shirley which lead to lots of early experience in animal care. After graduating from De Pere High School it was only natural for her to transition to Madison Area Tech where she received her veterinary technician training. She has two cats at home, Henry and Aggie. When Becky isn't helping out on the family farm or spending time with nephews she enjoys reading, painting, baking, decorating cakes and video games in addition to many outdoor activities such as swimming, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling and jet skiing. She and her husband most enjoy spending time together backpacking in beautiful wilderness areas.

Hannah has always had a love for animals. In 2022 she decided to pursue a career in pet grooming and hasn't looked back! She loves getting to know each individual pet and making them look their best. In her free time she can be found cuddling her calico cat Muffin.

I hail from Los Angeles, California; however, I resided in the Atlanta area for 15 years after I completed college. I attended graduate school in Atlanta. I went to Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and earned a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree. Later, I elected to enroll back into graduate school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Public Health, to complete the goal of earning a terminal degree. In 2005, I graduated with a Doctor of Public Health degree in the area of Maternal and Child Health.

Brandon Perry sees a connection between community health nursing and his calling as a motivational speaker and rapper. Growing out of youth work at their church, the Perrys spent several years as motivational speakers, traveling the country to speak at churches and schools. They would talk about setting goals, making good choices, and staying connected to support systems.

Brandon Perry attributes the success of their marriage to their flexibility, their shared goals, and their faith. In addition, they believe that seeing them persevere and earn degrees at one of the top schools in the country has been good for their daughters.

Preschoolers learn by exploring a stimulating environment organized into learning centers such as sensory and art, dramatic expression, block building, manipulative toys, math and science, literacy, media and quiet/relaxation. Children spend the day making choices of activities to participate in during free play periods, listening and contributing to large group circle time meetings and working together cooperatively in small, structured groups. Physical development is emphasized in outdoor play in parks and playgrounds and inside in organized games and classes. Kindergarten preparation emphasizes socialization and early reading, writing and problem-solving skills.

Hello! My name is Chanda E. Oatis and I am the proud Principal of Meany Middle School in the Seattle Public School District. I have held several roles in the Seattle School District; student, teacher, parent, house administrator, assistant principal, interim principal and principal. As a school leader, I strive to build authentic relationships with students, families and other educators, as we excel in our educational goals.

I have had the privilege and responsibility to teach and lead the development of the academic minds of the next generation and future society. Our society is a reflection of how we were educated in schools. As a leader, I have always been clear about our important charge. We are charged with creating educational opportunities that allow for ALL children to feel intelligent, valued, challenged and socially and emotionally supported every day. We are the students, the parents, the staff and the community. We will accomplish this by working collaboratively to ensure that all learning opportunities are inclusive and differentiated for our diverse learners, having high expectations for all, and planning engaging and culturally relevant instruction that is data-driven with clear goals and outcomes.

I have had the privilege and opportunity to serve as the principal of two Seattle Public Schools elementary schools and currently a middle school. Prior to that, I served as an instructional leader (House Administrator and Assistant Principal) at an SPS middle school. Nine years ago, when I was called upon to step into the role as an elementary school leader, I was honored and proud to be selected. I felt prepared to elevate to the next level of leadership in the district because my time spent at the middle school was purposely designed to prepare me to be a transformative leader. I really valued the experience of getting to know the elementary level in a more intimate way. Throughout my time in elementary school, my heart called out for the opportunity to serve at a secondary level again as a principal.

With my leadership experience at two diverse comprehensive middle schools and my success with two different socioeconomic communities at the elementary level, l am excited for the opportunity to learn alongside this group to continue to grow my leadership skills and knowledge.
