I have a June 2015 wedding coming up and I am anxious to start doing the signs with chalkboards. How early can I begin making these? How long will they last if kept in my basement and sprayed with hairspray?

Traditionally, formal fraction instruction begins at about the third grade. Before then teachers concentrate on the establishment of whole number competence. Little opportunity was given to manipulate instructional materials. Children were then compelled to learn a set of rules for dealing with fractions and be able to correctly apply these whenever the practical need arose. What teachers both then and now have neglected to do is establish what cognitive skills children possess upon which meaningful bases for the language and symbols of fractions can be established.

To provide the necessary dark surface and to keep the check exactly where I want it, I purchased a black magnetic chalkboard. These come in a variety of sizes. The smaller versions are less than $10 from Amazon. The one I purchased, called "U Brands Square Magnetic Chalk Board, 14 x 14 Inches, Frameless, Black, Marker Included (468U00-04)," works great.
