One of the most transformative lessons I’ve ever learned came from my journey with the book What Is Love? by Abigail Atkins. It completely changed my perspective on purpose and kindness. For the longest time, I searched for my purpose, convinced it was tied to something grand—maybe a dream career or a big, defining moment. But the deeper I sought God for clarity, the more I realized my purpose wasn’t in one enormous thing but in the many small, meaningful acts I could do daily.
And here’s the beautiful part: my purpose doesn’t require vast resources, unique talents, or even a perfect plan. It’s something I already have within me—something we all have. Kindness is free, and walking in kindness is walking in purpose.
When I came to understand that kindness is my purpose, I stopped underestimating its significance. Small, thoughtful acts of kindness are profound because they connect us to others on a deeper level. But to be truly kind, we need to be intentional and pay attention to the people around us.
Take a moment to reflect:
Are there people in your life who seem to prefer personal space, or are they more physically affectionate?
Do they have hobbies or special interests you could use to make their day brighter?
Is there something they dislike that you should avoid (like my strong feelings about mayonnaise)?
God gives us a perfect example of this. The Bible tells us He knows the number of hairs on our head (Luke 12:7). That’s not just a fact—it’s a demonstration of His deep attention to the details of our lives. While we may not need to go to that extreme, we can follow His example by learning and paying attention to what makes others feel loved and cared for.
If kindness is love in action, then understanding someone’s love language is the key to showing kindness in a way they’ll appreciate. Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages teaches us that people receive love differently—through acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, or physical touch. This insight is invaluable in tailoring acts of kindness.
For example:
A hug might warm the heart of someone who values physical touch.
A shared lunch or an invitation to spend time together might be the perfect gesture for someone who treasures quality time.
Words of encouragement could brighten the day of someone whose love language is affirmation.
To help you put kindness into action, let’s get creative. Here’s a simple activity:
Pick Someone Who Needs Kindness. Think of a friend, family member, coworker, or even an acquaintance.
Gather Materials for a Collage. Use magazines, printed pictures, or drawings to create a visual representation of the things that make them happy or that reflect their personality.
Study the Details. Include what you’ve noticed about them—their favorite hobbies, foods they enjoy (or dislike!), and ways they feel loved.
This thoughtful exercise will not only give you insight into how you can show kindness to that person, but it will also remind you to pay closer attention to the people in your life.
If you’re pressed for time, don’t worry—I’ve created a free printable page to make this process even easier. You can use it to take notes and brainstorm thoughtful ways to be kind. Download it now and start operating in your purpose today!
Kindness is powerful, but it’s also simple. It doesn’t require a grand gesture—just intentionality, attention, and love. Every small act of kindness has the potential to make someone feel seen, valued, and loved.
God created us for a purpose, and sometimes that purpose is as simple as spreading kindness. Let’s learn from His example, pay attention to the details, and love others well. Ready to start? Grab your scissors and glue, and let’s craft a life full of kindness!
