Envy can creep into our lives when we least expect it, stealing joy and replacing it with a cycle of comparison. But what if we could break free from envy and step into a life filled with gratitude? In this post, I'll share a personal story, a meaningful DIY project, and insights from my book What is Love? to help you cultivate gratitude and leave envy behind.
Envy often starts as a tiny seed of discontentment, fed by comparison. It keeps us stuck, staring longingly at what others have, while missing the beauty of our own blessings. But there’s good news—gratitude is a powerful antidote. When we shift our focus to the blessings we already have, envy loses its grip, and our hearts are filled with joy.
There was a time when I envied a woman I knew—she seemed to have it all. Her Facebook posts featured a beautiful home and a picture-perfect life. But one night at Bible study, as I spoke about comparison, she shared her own struggles. To my surprise, she envied me for the creative desserts I posted as a cake decorator. That moment opened my eyes. Instead of envy, I started to celebrate her victories and focus on running my own race, inspired by 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.
If you find yourself struggling with envy, remember this: your strengths and talents are unique gifts. There’s someone out there who admires what you do, even if you don’t realize it.
This week, let’s take a creative step toward gratitude with a DIY Gratitude Tree. This simple craft not only beautifies your home but also serves as a daily reminder to focus on the blessings in your life.
Sticks (gathered on a nature walk)
Paint (spray paint or acrylic)
A vase
Construction or scrapbook paper
String, yarn, or ribbon
Gather Your Materials: Take a peaceful stroll outside and collect sticks for your tree. Use this time to admire the beauty around you.
Paint the Sticks: Spray or brush paint your sticks. White, brown, or a seasonal color works great. Allow them to dry completely.
Create Gratitude Tags: Cut out paper leaves or hearts. Punch holes at the top and thread string through them for hanging.
Assemble the Tree: Arrange your painted sticks in a vase and hang the gratitude tags.
Encourage Participation: Place extra tags and pens near the vase, so family members can add their notes of gratitude.
This Gratitude Tree is more than just a craft—it’s a daily opportunity to focus on what matters most.
