RECORD BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE
Record Books are Available!
The 2023-24 4-H record books (e-Records) are available to download! It is never too early to start recording your 4-H Information. They are on the Boulder County 4-H Web Page: https://boulder.extension.colostate.edu/4h/4-h-projects/ As well as the state 4-H pages along with lots of supporting info like tip sheets, fair info, animal ID, etc.
Livestock - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/animals/
General projects - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/fcs/
Also - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/creative-arts/
Download your record book(s) and save them to your computer. Many come in both Excel and PDF versions. PDF is easier, especially if you just have one project. But Excel supports copy and paste and is better for kids doing multiple projects. If it is saved to your computer, you can just update it throughout the year as you go. You can also always print them out and do them by hand - your choice.
Download one for each project, and 1 for every 4 livestock projects. (For example, cake decorating has its book, shooting sports has its book, etc. Livestock allows for 4 livestock projects to be combined in one book, so dairy goats, utility goats, poultry, rabbits, etc, can all be together.) Dog and horse have their books.
Happy Record Keeping!
VOLUNTEER HOURS
Just a friendly reminder: Your volunteer hours are as priceless as your dedication to our 4-H program! As Sherry Anderson wisely said, "Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless."
We're here to help you shine by capturing your valuable contributions. Please take a moment to report your January through March hours using 4honline. Whether you prefer to log them monthly, weekly, or daily, your efforts are what truly make a difference.
For guidance on reporting, check out the attached PowerPoint. And if you have any questions, we're always here to assist. Thank you for all you do for our program!
Keep up the fantastic work, Boulder County 4-H Leaders!
CLUB NEWS
4X4 DOG CLUB
4x4 Dog Club
BY MANDY ROTH
Happy April. Our club had a great time at the 2024 4-H carnival. We ran our ball toss booth and sold soda. We all had a lot of fun volunteering for our club and exploring the other clubs' amazing booths. Thank you to everyone who came to support 4-H and our club, we can’t wait to do it again next year.
What is the 4x4 dog club?
I have been in the 4x4 dog club for 6 years now. It is an amazing way to learn about dogs and make amazing friends. But that's not all we have to offer. As you may be able to tell from our name, our club is focused on dogs. We have many members who show dogs through 4-H and have excelled at the county and state levels. So we provide helpful information on upcoming dog events and enrichment activities related to dogs. We also do many dog related fundraisers and service projects. Our club is also a great place to learn about dogs through our guest speakers (more on that below).
So you have to show dogs to join our club?
No. Our club is an open and inclusive space for everyone doing every project. We have a lot of amazing members who have done everything from cake decorating to showing chickens and are more than happy to teach you everything they know. This year we have multiple club members enjoying the fun of our club who are not showing dogs. No matter how old you are or what projects you do, our club is a happy and welcoming environment.
What was that about guest speakers?
One of my favorite parts of our club is listening to the different guest speakers who attend our meetings. Over the past few years in our club we have had lots of amazing guest speakers who have taught us about training and owning a police dog, training an avalanche rescue dog, training their dog to act in movies, and more. This month we had Diane Goss come speak at our meeting about her service dog and what Zuni does to assist her in a wheelchair. She taught us a little about the training of her service dog and some of the pitfalls of learning to work with a service dog.
LIVING EDUCATION
This has been a very busy and productive month for our club. In late February, we completed our large service project for the year. For months we worked coordinating with Sox Place – a homeless youth drop-in center in Denver. Our group prepared 400 meal portions and served food to the community for a whole day’s meal service. We also helped with various projects around the center as our members sorted and organized clothing and hygiene donations as well as helped organize the main office. It was a wonderful experience that filled our hearts and stretched our service muscles! We are thankful and excited to have served a place doing so much good for so many in our area, and it was wonderful to represent 4-H in doing so!
AWESOMELY INCLUSIVE
The Awesomely Inclusive club did our community service by donating towels and blankets to the Longmont Humane Society where the shelter staff gave us a tour - we played with the kittens and looked at x-rays too.

LIVESTOCK
POULTRY SUPERINTENDENTS NEEDED
Poultry Superintendents Needed For 2025
We are looking for a volunteer team to learn to help and learn along with the superintendents for the 2024 Boulder County Fair with the intention to apply for the positions and take over the role for the following year. Are you passionate about poultry? Do you love working with young people and helping them develop their skills? Then we have the perfect opportunity for you! As the Poultry Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent for Boulder County 4-H, you'll play a vital role in guiding our members through the exciting world of poultry projects.
As a Superintendent, you'll oversee all aspects of the poultry program, from organizing workshops and training sessions to coordinating competitions and events. You'll provide support and guidance to our members as they raise and care for their birds, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources they need to succeed.
As an Assistant Superintendent, you'll work closely with the Superintendent to help plan and execute various activities and initiatives. Whether it's assisting with record-keeping, mentoring youth members, or helping to set up for shows and exhibitions, you'll be an essential part of the team.
Both positions offer a rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of young people while sharing your passion for poultry. You are not required to be full experts in your species, so don’t let that limit the idea of you or someone you know in helping with the program.
If you are interested in more information or know of someone who might consider volunteering, please contact Brenda at the 4-H Office. Applications are open, so apply today.

Boulder County 4-H 2-year Dairy Steer Program (DSP)
The 4-H Dairy Cattle program is offering new classes. It promotes another side of the Dairy project. Learn how this project enters into our food chain other than with milk products. The dairy sector contributed 5.6 billion pounds (21 percent) of beef to the U.S. commercial beef supply. Dairy steers are well known for their ability to produce the highest quality grades of beef (Prime and High Choice cuts).
This will be a 2-year project, you will start with a bull calf, castrate, and feed him.
Dairy Cattle Project: Did you know?
Did you know that you can also do the Dairy Cattle Project and learn all the aspects of the dairy industry without you, yourself ever having to milk her?
You can start with a calf and exhibit the same heifer for 2 years (2 fairs) by following the DHRP (Dairy Heifer Replacement Program) rules & guidelines. You will also have an opportunity to sell your heifer through the Livestock Sale once she’s bred (check the rules), knowing that she will carry on in life as a producing cow. You could even apply to the Ag Youth Loan Program where you can purchase a calf for the 2-yr program or you can purchase a bred yearling that you can sell at the 2024 fair. You must have possession & ownership by the last Thursday in April (animal ID deadline) along with turning in the DHRP nomination form to the 4-H office.
If the idea of selling a dairy heifer interests you, please check out the DHRP rules and guidelines especially prior to purchasing a new heifer for this program. For more information about these programs or on the Dairy Cattle Project itself, even help in finding a dairy heifer, or a bull calf. Call Tina (303) 828-3789 or email: runrunnerrun@aol.com

Summer Camp: We've got some exciting news to share with you! Dr. Indrajit Ray from Colorado State University reached out to us about an amazing opportunity for high school students interested in cybersecurity.
They're hosting a FREE weeklong, non-residential Cybersecurity Summer Camp from June 3-7, 2024, at CSU. It's open to students in grades 10-12, and they'll get to dive deep into cybersecurity concepts, hands-on activities, and even Capture the Flag/Treasure Hunt Sessions!
If this sounds like something you or someone you know would be interested in, check out the details at https://csucybercamp.cs.colostate.edu. The application deadline is April 15, 2024.
Feel free to spread the word and share this awesome opportunity with any high school students who might want to join in the cyber fun! For questions, you can reach out to Dr. Ray at csucybercamp@cs.colostate.edu.
