A Commissioner for Oaths and a Notary Public both confirm the proper signing and swearing of documents, but a notary's authority is broader: it covers documents used outside Alberta and the certification of true copies. Our office has the authority to execute both types of documents. Use the sections below to identify the service your document needs.
Administer oaths and takes affidavits, affirmations, and statutory declarations for use within Alberta

Travel and Immigration Documents:
Child travel consent letters - confirming that a parent or guardian authorizes a minor to travel internationally.
Letters of invitation - for foreign nationals applying for a Canadian visitor visa.
Immigration documents - forms and declarations required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or foreign embassies.
Passport applications - declarations in lieu of guarantor, or declarations about lost, stolen, or damaged passports.
Complete all paperwork - All fields in the document must be filled out prior to the appointment, excluding the signature and date fields.
No Legal Advice - Legally, we are not permitted to help you complete your documents in any way, nor give you any advice as to whether your documents were completed properly.
Bring exhibits - Any documents or records referenced as exhibits within the affidavit or declaration must be present at the appointment.
For certified true copies - Bring the original document. Do not make your own copy. Our office will make the true copy.
Do NOT sign the document - The document must be signed and dated in the physical presence of the Commissioner for Oaths or Notary.
Any documents signed before the meeting cannot be commissioned nor notarized.
Verify a Commissioner Authorization - Check your document's instructions to confirm a Commissioner for Oaths is authorized or if a Notary Public is required.
Bring valid identification - Customers must present unexpired, government-issued photo identification (e.g., passport, provincial driver’s licence, or provincial identification card).
The government issued ID must be original. Photographs of your ID are not acceptable.
The name on your government issued ID must match the spelling of the name on your document exactly. Initials in place of middle names on an ID is acceptable, but nicknames and shorthands are not acceptable.
If your document requires additional witnesses - Bring your own witness.
A Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public cannot legally execute the document and act an independent witness on the same document that require two separate signatures.
