India celebrates Hindi Diwas on September 14th every year to mark the adoption of Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of India in 1949. Hindi was adopted as one of the official languages in order to simplify administration in the diverse land that is India with numerous languages and dialects. Some of the writers, poets, and activists who lobbied for Hindi as an official language were Beohar Rajendra Simha, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Kaka Kalitkar, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi and Saint Govind Das. Hindi was adopted as the official language of the union on Beohar Rajendra Simha's birthday, that is 14 September.Â
