Beginning Band

Use the menu to the left to navigate to self-guided learning activities through Smart Music and YouTube, along with other sources posted under each weekly heading.

Successfully completing these exercises should ensure that we can easily develop any pieces we wish to perform when we return.

If you need assistance:

Week of 3-25

Wednesday (3-25-20)

1. Sign up for the Benchmark Class in SmartMusic if you haven't already. Just click the little person icon in the upper right corner, click "Join a Class," then enter the following class code: 2NR3L-2VZDU

2. Download your instrument's Band Warmup from this website. Make sure you select your instrument under: First Year Band Warmup Sheet. It would be best to save this file on your device, as we will use this Warmup for the rest of the year.

3. Watch the video lesson on how to use the Warmup effectively.

4. Complete the Warmup.

5. Work on Benchmark 1 in SmartMusic if you have not already completed them. Do not submit the Benchmarks unless you have a 90 or higher. The goal at the end of the semester is to have completed all of the Benchmarks with a 90 or higher on each assignment OR to have spent 90 minutes of active practice time in the Benchmark class. Do not continue to the next Benchmark unless you have completed the first Benchmark with a 90 or higher.

6. Remember: Benchmarks will be used to determine placement in Intermediate and Advanced Band for next year. Due to the circumstances, we will be using input from small group teachers as well.

Thursday (3-26-20)

1. Work through the First Year Band Warmup. (Video explanation)

2. Use SmartMusic to continue working through your Band Method Book using the guidelines listed for each week. Band Method Book exercises will NOT be assigned in Smart Music--only Benchmarks are assigned.

3. Once you log in to SmartMusic and are on the home screen, you'll see your 10 Benchmark assignments. To work in the Method Book, go to the right side of the home scree, scroll down to "My Method Books" select "Tradition of Excellence" below it. This is how you will access the exercises in your Method Book.

4. Complete exercises #74, #75, #76. Try to get a 90 or higher on each one. YOU WILL NOT SUBMIT METHOD BOOK EXERCISES. This is for your individual improvement and to make sure you do not get behind. Successfully completing these suggested exercises on this schedule will allow you to successfully complete the Benchmarks 1-5 by the end of the semester. You can and will need to move faster if you wish to complete Benchmarks 1-10 by the end of the semester.

Friday (3-27-20)

1. Complete the Warmup from Wednesday and Thursday (see instructions from Wednesday and Thursday if unsure how to complete).

2. Use SmartMusic to complete exercises #77, #78, #79 (see instructions from Thursday if unsure how to access these in Smart Music; remember that the Method Book exercises are NOT assigned)

3. Try to complete Benchmark 2 if you successfully completed and submitted Benchmark 1. Do not submit Benchmarks until you have a 90 or higher.

4. Don't forget that Benchmarks were assigned before we transitioned to Online Learning--these will be used to determine placements in Intermediate and Advanced Band.
