Cell Notes can be installed from the Google Sheets add-on store. This article has instructions for accessing and using the Store. Follow the usual process to install.
Whenever you select a cell, the cell note (if any) attached to that cell will automatically appear in the sidebar.
You can view all the cell notes in the file by clicking on the Export All button on the SideNotes toolbar.
For more room, you can "pop out" the cell note into a full-size editor by clicking on the "expand" icon in the Cell Notes toolbar.
There is no need to save; Cell Notes auto-saves your changes immediately.
Basically, just start typing in the sidebar.
When the relevant cell is selected, just click the delete button (trash can) on the Cell Notes toolbar.
Let your collaborators know that they should install Cell Notes, and read this page if they need further guidance.
To export all cell notes in the Sheets file, click on the Export all cell notes button on the Cell Notes toolbar. A dialog will appear with all cell notes in it. From there you can copy/paste the cell notes into another application, or print (ctrl-p).
To export a particular set of cell notes, select a set of cells and click the Export selected cell notes button on the Cell Notes toolbar. This will open a dialog in which you will find a table with the selected cells, and beneath it the cell notes for cells in that selection.
To print a single cell note from the sidebar, ensure your curser is in the cell note and press your Print keyboard command (e.g. ctrl-p).
To print a single cell note from the full size editor, click on the print icon in the editing toolbar.
To print multiple cell notes at a time, first export the cell notes (see above) and then print (ctrl-p). You may need to "select all" (ctrl-a) the contents of the export window before issuing the print command.
Cell Notes is a simple extension of the existing Google Sheets Notes function. It stores the contents of cell notes in cells in a hidden sheet in your Sheets file. The row number of the cell on the hidden sheet becomes the index number for the cell note. Cell Notes adds this index number to a note attached to the cell to which the cell note is attached. When you click on any cell, Cell Notes looks to see whether that cell has a note attached, and if that note contains an index number for a side note. If it does, it looks up the cell note content in the hidden sheets, and loads it into the sidebar.
Since cell notes are stored as html in cells in your Sheets file, their size is fixed by the maximum size of Sheets cells. That is 50,000 characters. Note however that this character limit includes all html characters. Still, this should be enough for all reasonable uses.
Cell notes are stored as html code in cells in a hidden sheet of your Google Sheets file. You can view the Cell Notes Store sheet via the View menu. The Cell Notes app never stores your data in any location outside your file.
Yes, a cell note is accessible to any user who has access to the Sheets file and has Cell Notes add-on installed.
Also, any user can un-hide and view the Cell Notes Store sheet, and read the contents of any cell note in (ugly) html format.
Cell Notes uses the Google Sheets sidebar. This is fixed at 300px wide.
As an alternative to widening the sidebar, you can "pop out" a cell note into the Cell Notes full editor. Click on the "Full size editor" button in the Cell Notes toolbar.
Yes, if you really need to, you can always access cell notes, by un-hiding the Cell Notes Store sheet, and reading the contents of any cell note in (ugly) html format.
Currently images can be included only if they are hosted somewhere else on the internet. Use the image icon on the Cell Notes toolbar to insert a link to an image. There are many free services providing image hosting. One very easy way to upload an image so you can link to it in a cell note is to use Jing; see this WikiHow tutorial for step-by-step instructions.
Cell Notes is as secure as your Google Sheets file. The add-on does nothing "outside" that file. The Cell Notes developers never have any access to your information.
In this situation, the cell note content remains in the Cell Notes Store hidden sheet. However Cell Notes will not be able to "find" it anymore.
This could have unpredictable consequences. Really, don't mess with the Cell Notes Store hidden sheet. Just leave it hidden away.
