Exhibition Outline

Contemporary artist Okada Hiroko presents “Celebrate for ME – The first step,” a one-day only exhibition centering around experimental new works.

The centerpiece is a work based on the concept of making the day of the exhibition a celebration for every single visitor, who is at once the protagonist here.  

As a setting, the artist creates a theatrical space inspired by the image of a futuristic kind of ceremony where technology, an installation, performers and audience come together in perfect harmony.

A ceremony, a funeral, a celebration for seeing oneself off, bidding farewell to oneself.

An occasion for celebrating one’s love and affection for oneself, and being intoxicated by the festival of oneself.

A solemn yet merry event for visitors to celebrate themselves.

Visitors walk through the streets of Jimbocho in order to see the artworks presented at Venue 1 and Venue 2 (in this order), and in the process, write their own stories with themselves in the leading role.

It is a ceremony for oneself, a day of self-celebration, and perhaps an opportunity for parting with one’s former self and taking the first step in a new direction.

Creators from different fields joined forces for the realization of this project.

Around a number of core members, various other individuals got involved who will continue to participate throughout the new year. In this sense, the exhibition also marks the first step of an ongoing experimental project that will continue to grow and evolve.

We invite you to come and witness this first step!

The exhibition includes works to be listened to via the Internet. Please have your smartphones ready, and if possible, bring your own earphones. (A limited number of smartphones can be borrowed at the entrance.)

1. Celebrate for ME: okuru
Augmented reality + mixed media

Visitors experience and watch over one another in an augmented reality + mixed media environment using specially modified VR devices.

Visitors wear modified VR headsets, and enter a world in which they see themselves off at their own augmented reality funeral.

2. Celebrate for ME: ikeru　

Participatory installation for visitors to take care of their bones after death.

Darai, bar tender at Bar Tokyo Sabaku, an underground culture hangout in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho district, and other merry individuals celebrate something.

4. Music

The project features new music composed by musician NISHIKAWA Ken for this particular occasion.

Guidance around the artworks

The staff for this event will include personnel trained in attending persons with visual or hearing impairment, as well as English and French speaking visitors. Please ask for guidance around the artworks at the reception desk.

Contemporary artist.

Works with a wide range of media including video art, photography, painting and installation, to create artworks themed on current society and the future, while drawing inspiration from her own experiences of love, marriage, childbirth and parenting. Has had numerous exhibitions at museum, galleries and alternative spaces in Japan and abroad, and recently pursues new challenges such as publishing books and showing performance works.

Major works include Engaged Body, a story about the future of regenerative medicine; The Delivery by Male Project about male pregnancy; Di_STANCE, an expression of social distance fashion at W HIROKO PROJECT realized in collaboration with creators in the fashion industry; and The Exhibition that No One Comes, an interactive work in which the audience explores the venue while listening to the story of a fictional artist’s life during the pandemic. Although these works vary in technique, they share a futuristic perspective inspired by social backgrounds, intersecting the real and the unreal, and sending a message to contemporary society.

In addition to individual activities, Okada is also involved in many group art projects, such as leading the Alternative Puppet Theater “Gekidan Shiki,” partaking in the “Aida Family” art group and the W HIROKO PROJECT, an attempt to combine art, fashion and medicine in the midst of the COVID pandemic. One of the characteristics of her artistic activity is mutual stimulation and a pursuit of new expressions through collaborations with people in various occupations and positions.

Experiences with art direction for exhibitions and other events include “Art DE Date,” performances by the Alternative Puppet Theatre “Gekidan Shiki,” the WiCAN art project at Chiba University, etc.

Main exhibitions include a permanent display (for one year) at Ars Electronica Center (Linz, Austria / 2019), the Yebisu lnternational Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2019 (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum), “LESSON0” (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Seoul / 2017), and “Global Feminisms” (Brooklyn Museum, New York / 2007).

In 2022, she participated in the “We are here right now” exhibition at the Yonago City Museum of Art (Tottori), showcasing works she had been working on in collaboration with people in Yonago through a residency program, and in the Japan Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina (Novi Sad, Serbia) as part of the European Capital of Culture 2022 program. Publications include DOUBLE FUTURE: Engaged Body / The Delivery by Male Project (2019, Kyuryudo Art Publishing), a collection of her works, and The Casebook of Contemporary Art Detective Gendaichi Kosuke (2015, Art Diver), an adaptation of puppet plays (co-authored).

展覧会概要

現代美術家の岡田裕子が、1日だけの実験的新作を中心とした展覧会を開催します。タイトルは

「Celebrate for ME – The first step」

これは、来場者それぞれが主役になった、１日だけの祝祭というコンセプトの作品で成り立っています。

テクノロジーとインスタレーション、パフォーマーたち、そして観客。

それらが渾然一体となり、近未来的なセレモニーをイメージした劇場的空間を創ります。

自分が自分を見送る儀式・・・自分の葬送、自分へのはなむけ、自分のイワイ。

己の骨を愛し、己を慈しみ、己の祝祭に酔う。

厳かでかつ賑やかな、自分へのイワイの１日。

第一会場から第二会場へと、神保町の街並みを移動しながら作品を巡り、観客である参加者が主役のストーリーが紡がれます。

自分のためのセレモニーを、自分がイワウ日。

それは、これまでの自分への別れを告げるThe first stepかもしれません。

本プロジェクトのために、様々なクリエーター達が集まりました。

このプロジェクトメンバーをはじめとし、様々な方々と関わりながら、来年以降も新たな試みへ成長していく、実験的試みの第一歩でもあります。

拡張現実＋αの作品。

手塩にかけ改造したVR機による拡張現実＋αを、観客が体験し観客が見守る。

参加者は、改造したVR機を装着し、＜自分が自分のおくりびとになる＞という拡張現実の葬送世界に没入する。

岡田裕子 Biography　

現代美術家。

ビデオアート、写真、絵画、インスタレーションなど多岐に渡る表現を用いて、自らの実体験̶恋愛、結婚、出産、子育てなど

ー自らの実体験からヒントを得ながら、現代社会と未来をテーマにした現代美術作品を生み出している。国内外の美術館、ギャラリー、オルタナティブスペース等にて展覧会多数。近年は著書出版やパフォーマンス作品の発表など、新たな挑戦が続く。

主な作品には、再生医療の未来をストーリー化した「エンゲージド・ボディ」、男性の妊娠をテーマとした「俺の産んだ子」、ファッション業界のクリエイターと共同で行われたW HIROKO PROJECT でソーシャルディスタンスのファッションを表現した「Di_STANCE」、パンデミック下の架空のアーティストの生活の声を観客が聞きながら会場を探検する体験型作品「誰もこない展覧会」などがある。

これらは手法は様々であるが、どれも社会背景をヒントにした未来予想的視点で現実と非現実を交差しながら、現代社会へメッセージを発している。

個人活動の他にアートプロジェクトも多数手がけている。様々な職種、立場の人々と時に協働しながら、互いに刺激を分け合いながら新しい表現を追い求める芸術活動も岡田の仕事の特徴の一つである。＜オルタナティブ人形劇団「劇団☆死期」＞を主宰。家族のアートユニット<会田家>。コロナ社会の中でのArt×Fashion×Medical の試み＜W HIROKO PROJECT＞などがそれにあたる。

イベントや展覧会のアートディレクション経験に「アートDE デート」、「オルタナティブ人形劇団「劇団★死期」パフォーマンス」、千葉大WiCAN のアートプロジェクトなど。

主な展覧会は、アルスエレクトロニカセンター１年間常設展示（リンツ・オーストリア／2019）、「第11 回恵比寿映像祭」（東京都写真美術館／2019）、「LESSON0」（韓国国立現代美術館、ソウル／2017）、「Gloval Feminisms」(ブルックリン美術館、ニューヨーク／2007)など。

2022 年は、滞在制作を経て米子に生きる方々と共同で進めてきた作品群を展示する「今ここにいますー岡田裕子×AIR475」（米子市美術館）、欧州文化首都事業2022 としてのボルボティナ美術館（セルビア）での日本展に参加するなど、ますます旺盛に活動を続けている。著書に、作品集「DOUBLE FUTURE─ エンゲージド・ボディ／俺の産んだ子」（2019/求龍堂）、人形劇を書籍化した（共著）に「ゲンダイチコースケの事件簿」（2015/ART DIVER）など。
