WHO WE ARE

The Centre for Environmental Justice Society (CEJ) was established to address the longstanding issue of environmental racism in the historic African Nova Scotian community of Shelburne.

WHY WE DO IT

Our work is a direct response to this history of harm. We exist to restore what has been taken, advocating for remediation, reparations, and sustainable development. We believe that everyone including our land, water, and all living things has an inherent right to a clean, healthy, and prosperous life.

WHAT WE DO

The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) is committed to community-led solutions for environmental justice. By prioritizing community health, mental well-being, and quality of life, we strive to address the lasting impacts of environmental racism in historically marginalized communities. Our work focuses on advocating for remediation, reparations, and sustainable development to create a healthier future for all.

Holistic Healing: We provide a dedicated space for holistic healing, with a focus on Afrocentric-integrated healing and wellness practices for residents impacted by environmental issues.

Community-Led Solutions: We lead genuine community consultations and engagement efforts to ensure that our solutions and goals for addressing environmental racism are identified and driven by the community itself.

Site Restoration and Risk Management Advocacy: We are committed to reviving and restoring impacted and contaminated sites. Additionally, we support and develop risk management plans to help affected communities with issues like displacement and disaster preparedness.

Community-Based Research and Monitoring: We study and monitor the relationship between race, socioeconomic status, and health outcomes within environmentally impacted communities to better inform our strategies.
